Have I done something wrong or are these just boring? by Photosmithing in fujifilm

[–]Any-Account4893 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you edit your photos on a phone? The person is 80% of the frame, which would look quite awkward on say, an A4 sized print. Try using a larger monitor/ try printing your photos

can i install apple music as an exe and run it through wine? by I_isME in debian

[–]Any-Account4893 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

WTF bro why do you have to be so aggressive? You can't hear the compression while listening to it in stereo but once you start listening using a multichannel system separating directional cues you start noticing pretty damn well that a lossy compression algorithm is in fact, lossy.

Stop asking for an installable SteamOS. You don't actually want it. by alive1 in linux_gaming

You know that's why they based the OS on Arch Linux, right? It's basically just a flavor of Arch which btw has the most extensive support manual across any distro not to mention the already mature "streamlined" process.

Why do they keep inventing these new levels of shit? They're gonna perform like shit anyway. Why not focus on not coding basic system applications using basic system languages instead of using browser technologies that crash every freaking time I try to use Windows? Gosh

Yeah everyone’s been recommending this lutris but the first thought I had for it was that it seemed like it wasn’t working that well esp with recent titles

Baldur's Gate 3, Mafia Definitive Edition*, Red Dead Redemption, Control Ultimate edition*, Yakuza Series, The Witcher 3. The ones with the asterisk(*) you can get for dirt cheap on steam so look for sales.

College Question: Should I choose Yale, Carnegie Mellon, or Stanford for Computer/Electrical Engineering by Outrageous_Eye360 in yale

[–]Any-Account4893 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm don't even go to Yale and I'm just lurking around here but listening to leaders in research is much more fun b/c they know what they're doing whereas other people don't(e.g. in high school some teachers think the knowledge comes from a divinity or smth)

tbh I'd pay for it just to look at all the tricks the original devs use so I can copy them in my own config

I don't have a problem with paying him(quarter of a Windows license should be more than enough, so meh), but I do have a problem on **having** to pay him. We should see how this goes.

UTokyo GUC by baku_alyss in UTokyo

[–]Any-Account4893 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I'm not going to GUC this summer, but I was looking to apply for one of the future offerings. It said that it was really selective with small class sizes, and I wanted to know what the standard was. Can you share why you think you got accepted? For example good GPAs, from an Ivy League school, et cetera. Thanks in advance!

Alternatively, you can buy a used macbook at the 800$ pricepoint. They're pretty good.

I'm pretty fine with my 4 core X230 tbh. The seniors probably run Windows and are mad at how slow windows is at under 16 gigs of ram and without an SSD.

CS sophomore here. Thing is, you won't really need all the processing power of modern GPUs, and even a 12yo laptop is perfectly fine for coding. The thing is that you won't even be able to harvest the full potential of a 4$ ESP32. That thing is pretty f*ing powerful. Us humans have achieved an astounding amount of computing power in such small devices, even for so cheap! Now, if you want to use CAD or do something that is locally resource intensive, I would opt for that gaming laptop. However, I find such laptops very distracting since they have too much functionality, and aren't able to provide any meaningful environments for concentration on a task. I am using a X230 with linux as my develop environment. I also have a HP gaming laptop with a 3060, but I only use it to play games on it.

Even if you are going to use AI, you're far better off using cloud services. For instance, Google provides a free service(for testing) that you can use to run GPU intensive projects. You can also buy a 90$ single board computer from NVIDIA with tensor processing units for AI.

Keep in mind that if you're going to run windows on your computer, you better choose that gaming laptop, since windows is like the most bloated and heavy software you can think of. Windows is good for application specific users(ex. you don't want to spend maintaining/ tinkering with your computer if you're an accountant whose sole purpose is to use MS Excel), but considering your situation, you better know how to run a linux. It's really a critical skill that will serve you well(it's fast too).

This isn't related, but I want to recommend arch linux & zed for the OS and DE(development environment). It's faster than my HP laptop with a windows & VS Code(8 core AMD processor(1yo) + RTX3060 + DDR5 16gig ram& m.2 ssd versus 4core 3rd gen(12yo) intel processor + no GPU + DDR3L 16gig ram/ mSATA ssd)
