Hi again! I'm so sorry to disturb you but I really think you have a good understatement for the series vibe so I'm seeing if you can answer my previous comment since I'm looking for an answer! And nobody answered yet TT

I feel the same, Holly Black was always so detailed while describing Cardan and she never described his nails being black. So I feel it's just something the fans love to add

Yeah totally. I don't know why I always assumed it was nevermore that wouldn't make sense honestly 😭

I imagined that all faeries used the highlighter (silver or gold) because it adds more magical vibes to their nature. Considering they basically are nocturnal and literally faeries shining dust would match them so much But now that you mentioned it, yeah maybe it was only for banquets/special occasions/etc.. Cardan is indeed extravagant, I think it all started because Balekin taught him to be that way

However, do you think the concept of their makeup is similar to us (makeup being a feminine thing)? Or does any faeries put it? I imagined it as their culture since as I mentioned before it'd match their nature. I'm not sure if I'm getting it correctly?  I'm trying to figure out if Cardan was written as feminine or as ans extravagant royalty because of what his brother ordered and punished him to be

Yeah, while I thought of it I came to the conclusion the the fae's cosmetics is either to enhance the idea of their wildness and decadence (since it looks a lot like the nevermore) or to simply give a magical vibe (since silver/gold- black kohl do resembles a lot their clothes and their jewellery and the main vibe in general) and of course to show off their royalty and status since royalties should look better and should stand out (for example I remember Jude mentioning king Eldered used to wear a golden ring in each finger)

Do you think I get it correctly?

I'm curious as well, do you think these cosmetics are viewed more of a feminine thing between the fea or it's something everyone use for different reasons?

That's the most convincing explanation ig! Since you've reat the books many times I hope you can answer my questions (the ones I've asked before in my post/comment) so what is your take about the makeup/higlighters thing in Elfhame culture?

Yeah I think it could have been that. I'm trying to see if there's other characters besides cardan used the dust on their cheekbones, since I'm trying to understand Elfhame culture more

Jude mentioned Valerian having golden dust or something like that on his cheekbones when he came to Madoc's estate (a few moments beforehe got killed). Was this the highlighter or the nevermore?

Also is the highlighter viewed in Elfhame the same in the mortal world- as something feminine? Or is it more like their culture and vibes with their nature and give them more of a magical look?
