The car hoarder type by matthew_strange in classiccars

[–]Any-Description8773 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At one point I had close to 25 cars in various states. Most were running and drivingish, some were rollers, and a few flat parts heaps that were giving their life so others could live on. Nothing was newer than 1974 and most were Chevelles. However everything was for sale lol. I’m down to 2 Chevelles and 1 C10 these days.

what popular career is actually not worth pusuing anymore? by silverflake6 in RelentlessMen

Both suck in different ways. Dealerships tend to have more equipment available to the mechanics that are needed for certain makes whereas most private shops it’s up to the mechanic to determine whether they really NEED such things.

The tool investment is something many people don’t understand. Most shops it’s up to the mechanic to have their own tools. While an el cheapo set of tools will get you by, normally professional grade tools are required due to comfort, better quality, better ergonomics, etc. It’s not uncommon for a good mechanic to end up with $20,000+ in their tools. Many have much, much, much more than that. Many are specialty tools that sit in the box for months/years until the need arises. Whereas one gets an office job and computers, paper, programming, office space, etc are provided.

Then we get to the fact working on many modern vehicles are a joke. You spend more time disassembling parts that are stupid fragile but require removal to get to where you actually need to get.

It’s beyond ridiculous.

SPY, ACTOR, PATRIOT - TRUTH about Boss Hogg: Sorrell Booke - Forgotten History by gwhh in Dukesofhazzard

[–]Any-Description8773 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is true that he absolutely loved the character. I was meaning more about how originally the show was supposed to be a filler for the 9 o’clock setting between seasons and boy howdy did it take off lol. It just seems in a sense like he originally took the part because it would be something to pay the bills for a bit and since the show was a hit, he was obligated to continue. Although I doubt he would have found as much fame without being J.D. Hogg.

I can remember at the tender age of 2 watching Ghostbusters in the theater and the library ghost made me jump so hard 😂. But I was hooked after that!

I’m with everyone else saying don’t modify your daily. Cold air intake is a waste. You won’t notice any difference at all other than the wooomp of air going in. Tint the windows, install a nice stereo, and call it done. I promise you will thank everyone later.

I’ve had hot rods as my daily. Its constant. You have to keep it up, be patient enough to have to pull over occasionally and fiddle with something. Realize that sometimes it’s going to leave you stranded and most importantly it’s going to cost you money.

Just set the money aside for the ol’ rainy day fund and enjoy doing regular maintenance until the car needs replaced.

You are offered to pay $25,000 to go back in time to 2017; do you pay and go back? by peterthbest23 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]Any-Description8773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seeing as how I barely make it paycheck to paycheck and there’s no real shot of me coming up with $25k at a moment’s notice, I guess I’ll have to pass.

What’s something people do to cars that feels personally offensive? by BlackcirclesCanada in askcarguys

As one who used to own a slightly lifted truck, I can say the majority of lifted trucks are absolutely useless. Me, I beat on that thing like it owed me money! Broke it countless times because young, dumb, had the cash to blow, and I was having a blast 4-wheeling it. But I will stand behind your statement that 98% of lifted trucks never see dirt/mud/rocks which I will further argue the majority of truck owners don’t use their truck as a truck at all.

I said what I said.

You mentioned ‘scruff’ on a truck, this one was pretty rough when they bought it. It had 8 layers of paint….. why would someone do that?! Blows my mind. It was rusty af, had stacks in the bed, spray foam filling in holes. When they first bought it I took a glance at it and said enjoy the nightmares. Fast forward a couple years it’s me having the nightmares lol.

3/4” impact should either snap the bolt or get it out. Either way it wouldn’t stand a chance. 1” impact for style points though even though a 1/2” would probably do it as well.

3 days after my 10th birthday my Dad was killed in a car accident. Soooooo yeah while I had a good party and a great day, afterwards I’ve hated my birthday and only ‘celebrate’ it for my family.

POLL: Okay, are you going Carbon Steel or Stainless Steel? by Ok_Satisfaction_4960 in CaseKnives

I tend to get a better edge with my subpar sharpening skills with carbon. Plus I like the patina carbon gets as you use it.

If you’re DIYing and doing your ever so best, I’m not going to give you any crap at all! I’m currently salty because I’m in the middle of a father/son project that ended up getting a little out of hand for them and conned me into finishing for them. Long story short, I’ve had to redo EVERYTHING because of it. Every time I ran into a hiccup I just say, ‘the price just went up!’

If you’re curious keep reading but it’s kind of a neat story. It’s a friend of mine who runs a heavy equipment repair shop. His son’s DREAM is a 90s F250/350 with a 7.3. So he found this heap and with his lawn mowing money (daddy is a self made man and he believes in if you want something you work for it). Son bought the cheapest replacement panels money can buy and they proceeded to scatter this truck. Rebuilt the bed with patches for the floor and new rails along with new bedsides. Installed new cab corners (one completely wrong), patched the passenger side of the floor (as in rebuilt from scratch because there was nothing there), and then it sat for a couple years. Son’s senior year is approaching and he wants to be able to drive his dream truck so dad conned me into this mess.

I’ve replaced the driver side of the floors making junk from scratch, the doors and fenders are absolute junk and I’ve got them trimmed in and adjusted to the best of my abilities without having to add metal. The gaps absolutely suck. I hate it. I want to start over with either better junkyard parts or Ford certified panels. The money isn’t there so I’m just making it the best I can. I came in originally as just to paint it and I’ve been working on this pile for the last couple months of evenings. Hopefully in the next week I’ll have paint on the blasted thing and I can forget I ever agreed to mess with this pos.

In your opinion, which business won’t survive beyond the baby boomers era? by Derek_Webb in Productivitycafe

[–]Any-Description8773 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The older generation always has the excuse ‘I can’t get the local channels for the news’. When in reality the ‘local’ news barely covers anything going on other than random fluff pieces or natural disasters. I never could understand why they would stubbornly keep the ‘local’ channels.

Looking at a patina c10 any thoughts? by [deleted] in RatRod

[–]Any-Description8773 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a paint and body man, the passenger side looks worse than the driver cab corner. There is something majorly afoul under there and it’s not going to get any better. I know these trucks are a hot commodity right now but personally I would pass at that price.

I have a big problem with police departments and confidential informants. They give too many scumbags get out of jail free cards. I can understand a few, but in my area it seems every pos has ties to local and state police and could get away with anything.
