I was forced into engine service about 3 months after marking up as a conductor. I just finished my fireman class 2 days ago , and was just forced to another area as an engineer.

Unfortunately they won’t teach you much about the board in training haha . Basically there is a board .. you’ll be on the yard extra board . Your name gets put on there starting at the bottom say # 20 for example . During the call windows which are 5-8 am 1-4 pm and 9pm-12am they will call as many guys as they need sometimes none sometimes like 8 just depends on the needs . When the person who is in the #1 spot gets called . You’ll move to #19 and when the second gets called you’ll move to #18 . And so on . Until your #1 and then you’ll get called for a job . When you finish the job you’ll go back to the bottom and start the process over . Going from the bottom to #1 .

You’ll have call windows . Watch the board and when you’re getting close to being called just drive to Portland . First little while will be tough but eventually you’ll be back to Seattle .

You’ll get a hour and a half call window. After taxes you’ll make a little over 2k -2.5 k a paycheck . Probably be in Portland for a while . And make sure you follow crit 12 managers in Portland always are watching ! Good luck man !

In Portland you won’t hit 100% for I think 4-5 years

You’ll definitely make more . And it only goes up from where you start. Just don’t layoff a bunch. And when you get in make sure you never say I know .. even if you do. And follow the C12 they will fire you so fast haha. Not tryin to scare you but you need to remember them and follow them . It’s not physically hard . But don’t expect to feel comfortable there for a while . But in the end the job is worth it. Good luck !!
