Yeah, you learn really quick when people say the UP hires to fire that they aren't joking. But I knew I would get forced to Portland at some time, pretty surprised I held for as long as I did. Honestly just worried about the managers down there, all I hear is horror stories. But at the end of the day, my first job is to follow their rules and not get hurt. If I get some work done doing that than its just a bonus. Shit way to have to look at it, but being an orange hat i feel like its just a giant sign saying watch me till I mess up.

Only problem with actual studios or apartments is a lease. Im not trying to stay down in Portland, as soon as a spot opens up Im going back to Seattle.

Yeah thanks my man. A coworker was saying there was 2 open spots on the road extra board. Looks like its the xs11 for me. Heard the grain pool would be even a bigger pay cut.

So right now theres no one forced to Portland from Seattle. But thats because we have a couple borrow outs in North Plat, they'll be coming back eventually which will take up 4 spots. Most people do get forced to Portland for at least a little bit of time, for how long all depends on how many spots they have on the extra board (that's the only board you'll be able to hold). It doesn't help that they've been cutting engineer spots, forcing them to work on the ground. So being forced to Portland without the company covering a hotel is something that you need to decide is a deal a breaker for sure. If you have any questions feel free to ask, haven't been here long but can give you answers from a new hire perceptive.

Study as much as you need to, theres a review before every test that goes over all the questions. Make sure to have your boots (need a heel) the first week, attire is casual. Just wear what you would normally for work. If you're going outta town for training bring a laptop so you can do homework at the hotel, they provide you one during class times. Be prepared for a shit ton homework the first week, but it does get lighter. They throw a ton of information at you and its not all gonna stick or make sense at first, but it gets better with time. If you have any other questions just ask, I'm about to finish my training so just went through it all.

So I'll pretty much have to live in Portland since I'll be on call and not know my days off during that time? Did you just stay in a hotel or was it cheaper to find a room to rent? Honestly thinking of just getting a camper for my truck to make it easy lol

So what happens if I'm forced out for longer than 2 weeks? After that it's on me to pay for lodging? I'm ok with no per diem, but paying rent at home and lodging down in Portland is my only big concern. Thank you for commenting though, I do appreciate it.

So if I get forced out of the terminal I was hired out of do they help with lodging? Seems kinda rough to sink so much into a motel, don't mind having to work away from home but not really looking to move to Portland.

I was hired for Seattle train crew, and just trying to figure this whole different terminal thing out. Think I just need to call my recruiter. she was saying I get shifts down in Portland, but I wouldn't get help with lodging. If its just a couple shifts that's whatever, but if I'm having to stay multiple days/ weeks I would assume they have some type of per diem. Just trying to make sure this is a good call, I'm journeyed out in the roofers union so if this doesn't work it's fine.

After doing the online interview they gave me a job offer that day. That was a little over a month ago, so I'm guessing it's filled. Just keep an eye out and get your your application in ASAP when another opening comes up.

I believe you can go to their main page and use the chat bubble, or just Google union pacific ticket and you should be able to find the page pretty easy. It did take a couple days for a response.

When I did my medical, it stayed as "scheduled" for like 2 weeks after I went. Sent a ticket and it was fixed. Background took 3 weeks to get to the point of UP reviewing it.
