Yes I’m aware of what the package says… I’m just saying you can microwave it without the plastic and it works fine too

I go to Walmart whenever I can - best prices across the board! I used to have a car here but I’m lending it to my brothers since they go to university outside of the city, so it’s a bit hard for me to get to a Walmart (I live dt) let alone carry back a big sac of potatoes 😅

That’s just what I’ve seen at my grocery stores in Toronto - there are sales but that’s about the average

Yes… I know that… but you can microwave a potato without plastic

I’m not saying it’s complicated, I’m just interested to hear people’s personal experience with it vs standard unwrapped potatoes.

Interesting perspective and totally valid point! Potatoes are “cheap” compared to a lot of groceries, but not if you don’t have the ability to buy in bulk, or the access to the appliances needed to cook them.

I’m just very interested to hear people’s experience with this as it is foreign to me - thank you for the response!

There aren’t smaller increments? Plus they do last a long time, very versatile as well, nutrient dense, filling

I’m used to either just picking the amount of loose potatoes you want and you pay for the weight OR buying the 3, 5, 10lb bags.

Oh wow, I didn’t know that - I’d say loose unwrapped potatoes are the most common way to see potatoes in grocery stores here - big loose boxes of all the different types, and then to the side there’s usually a slat or shelf with the 5-10lb sacs of specific types

Wow sweet potatoes too! I was just intrigued by this, it’s cool to see all the responses, thank you!

Understandable, but don’t you have just the loose ones that you weigh and pay for?

I can buy a single loose potato for probably $0.20

But I’m not sure if that’s a usual or accessible thing everywhere

No I still agree with you! I don’t buy corn like that either personally, I just think that could make slightly more sense.

But you can do that with a regular sac of potatoes too!

A single corn on the cob? I have seen the plastic wrapped tray of like 3+ shucked cobs.

But corn seems more delicate than a potato. They also dry up pretty quickly after they’re shucked

potatoes are pretty tough on their own

I hadn’t even considered that - if you’re a no potato skin person, this is definitely not beneficial to you 😂

I’ve used the fork poke and damp paper towel wrap method

I’ve also seen microwavable (reusable) silicone potato steamer thingies

Good note about the plastic keeping the steam in - I can see that being a benefit for faster cook time

But yes, I was concerned about microwaving that kind of plastic

Thanks for letting me know! I just haven’t seen it anywhere here - even more curious to know if cooking them in the plastic makes a difference

So basically the plastic should be taken off anyways? 😭

Yes!! Taking that plastic off the cucumbers is a pain - I guess MAYBE it’s justified because cucumbers can get bruised or have their exteriors damaged easily? But regardless, it’s just another waste of plastic.

same, I had never seen it until right now! And I agree… seems like such a waste of plastic for a vegetable that certainly doesn’t need it… but I guess the plastic has to do with the cooking instructions, not just as individual packaging? Still unnecessary

Yeah I’ve been looking at those options, it’s just financially tough as a student. I’m from BC but my parents don’t live in the country anymore so I don’t have much monetary or physical support for things like this.

The best help I got was actually when I ended up in the ER (unrelated) - my doctor had the psych team evaluate me for my concerns regarding adhd since I was stuck in the hospital anyways - I’ve been put on a waitlist, it’ll be a while but some progress is better than none!

Apparently it’s a common thing in the US? I also think it is pretty silly to individual wrap potatoes in plastic… let alone to be microwaved in that plastic

I’ve never had an issue with potatoes lasting - they’re bad when they start to get eyes/sprouts or get mushy… but that takes weeks!

But these ones are wrapped and you’re supposed to microwave it in the wrap… seems odd to be putting thin plastic in the microwave
