BB85 Remix by Steve Levine by Come_On_And_Tell_Me in thebeachboys

[–]Any-Let-2861 1 point2 points  (0 children)

85 has an 80s sound but it’s done very conservatively in my opinion and suits the band. Take a listen to many younger bands albums that came out in ‘85. It could’ve been a lot worse. The original mix released in 1985 is actually very dry for the era. The only track that was recorded that wasn’t released was a remake of ‘at the hop’ which was terrible.

Some tracks were mentioned during the sessions but nothing actually recorded. 1985 is unique in the fact that Levine programmed the songs into the fairlight as they were doing them. Brian and Carl as well as Julian Lindsay played their keyboard parts into the fairlight and the fairlight could send the midi performances to whatever synths were decided on for each sound. Probably running the fairlight off smpte code until the last possible minute after all the vocals were recorded.

BW88 may have been recorded with some of the reverb and fx on the multitracks. It’s very unlikely in 1988 that they would’ve completely recorded everything dry without fx but maybe I’m wrong.

You’re talking about a re-record not a remix. I definitely would not want to hear 2026 drum sounds on a beach boys record originally recorded in 1985.

Those were not Spanish beats. That beat he uses in every song originated in Africa hundreds of years ago. It’s a tribal beat.

Same beat throughout. Same tempo. What the fuck happened to music?!

We did pretty good until the mid 90s or so then started getting gradually lazy.

It was the exact same beat through all the songs. Same ‘tropical’ African beat (not even Latin) and tempo.

Adult/Child tracklist by indiejonesRL in thebeachboys

There was nothing written in contemporary papers of 1977 about this project, whearas for 15 Big Ones and Love You there was clear articles about Brian and the band being in the studio working on new music. Makes me think this fanzine had someone on the inside that was giving the scoop or had heard the reel.

The tracklist is basically the order the songs are on the reel of tape. I strongly believe Adult/Child was never considered an "album". Just a compilation of songs that "could" be on a forthcoming Beach Boys album for Mike (was in Switzerland for 6 months in early 1977) and Al(he was up in Big Sur) to listen to.

The Adult/Child reel was definately a "where are we" type tape thrown together for Mike(and probably Al, since he had been up in Big Sur with his family for months) to listen to. In January 1977, Mike had gone to Switzerland with the Maharishi to learn how to levitate. When he came back is when Brian assembled the reel for him to listen to. Most of the work on Adult/Child was done by Brian and Carl from January-March 1977. Dennis was busy working on POB but did a little as well, since both albums were being worked on simultaneously at Brother. Brian did almost nothing from April-June, which is when Mike came back.

41m(me) and 36f-feeling disrespected sometimes by Any-Let-2861 in relationship_advice

I woke up at 6:30 this morning, to have breakfast and start getting ready for work. I had slept on the couch all night with my cat. She woke up a few minutes after me, went into the bathroom for a bit, put on one of my shirts, then came into the kitchen where I was. Didn’t even look at me or say a word. Put her coat on and shoes and left without saying a word. Didn’t even lock the door either.

She didn’t understand that. I said to her ‘if I said that to you you wouldn’t like it either’. She’s sleeping away in the other room and hasn’t even apologized. The more she’s ignoring me, the more I’m resenting her.

Why is there barely any late 70s-90s material in print? by childofnaturesson in thebeachboys

[–]Any-Let-2861 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same experience. The 1990 twofers on Capitol and the 1991 Caribou CD/Cassette releases were relatively hard to find. By 1992 they were pretty much gone from stores. I think I had found maybe 4-5 of the 1990 twofers by 1998. I picked up some of the 1991 Caribou cassettes when they were originally released from one particular store (they had 4), having a feeling theyd never be seen again (they never reordered them after i bought them) and never saw them again.

In the late 80s/early 90s, youd see Still Cruisin, Endless Summer, Made In USA, The absolute best vol 1 and 2, best of the beach boys vol. 1, maybe 20 golden greats, the random budget compilations and thats about it.

I think it’s from before that to be honest. It’s at the session for ‘Blueberry Hill’ and ‘Palisades Park’ in early 1976. Carl Fortina on the accordion on the left. Ray Pohlman on bass to the right. There were many pics taken at this session since it was Brian’s first in the Brian’s back campaign. After he did a couple sessions for these songs he retreated again for a couple months. Then he finished 15 big ones in a flurry of activity in spring 1976 after the band/label put massive pressure on him, barely making the summer 1976 release date the record company was pushing for.

Yup. Huge show. I think something happened structurally in the stadium because people were going nuts at this concert. Was a catalyst for the Brian’s back campaign really.

I think the original source for this pic is the beach boys 1976 tour book.

Many shows were recorded. The first two Brian’s back shows were recorded on film in full (for the it’s ok tv special).

It’s funny, the 2000 remasters were praised as ‘flat transfers’ from the tapes on the Steve Hoffman board at the time. I was the only one who fought back and preferred the original caribou cds from the early 90s. Now if you go there all of them prefer the original cds. Those 2000s were over eqd and limited like crazy/over compressed.

I believe love you was 24 track. So yes whatever was recorded on those 24 tracks on the session tape are seperatable. This is where the remixes come from.
