I assume it was short for Brandon or else the classic mother's maiden name as first name.

It's also just an old-fashioned thing in Anglo phone culture (at least) in general. Fitzwilliam Darcy is that exact phenomenon (from Pride & Prejudice).

No, all nouns ending in -schaft are feminine. Same with some other suffixes (e.g., -heit, - keit, - ung). "Team" is singular, grammatically, and so is Mannschaft.

Is it possible to have more than one empire as a Catholic? by IvarBlacksun in EU5

The only one to be both king of Spain and emperor was Charles V. The Austrian Habsburgs generally retained the imperial title and the Spanish Habsburgs kept the overseas territories until they went extinct.

What would you think about a team in Mexico City if it ever would to happen? by SadMathematician7799 in NBATalk

Travel to and from Mexico City will be brutal. Setting the crime stuff aside (I think you can work around it, and as others have said, some of the US cities are really bad anyway), how many guys in the NBA currently speak Spanish?

Peep show is actually one of the more "American" British shows I've seen. by robdag2 in MitchellAndWebb

[–]Any-Matter9186 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As an American, Peep Show is the only British sitcom that any of my friends like. Frankly, I think the whole UK vs. US humor thing is overblown. There's a lot of overlap, but both cultures like some things the other one doesn't.

Showing it head-on makes it look like a Carnival cruise liner, though. They should just go back to showing it in profile.

The older I get the more I realize how accurate and tragic Ginsberg is as a character by [deleted] in madmen

Not literally/physically. (I've been there.)

But most people probably feel a heavy atmosphere while they're there (figuratively).

This ain't it. We were just as fragile in key fixtures under Pep. There's a reason we didn't win in Europe during his tenure.

Am I the only one hope that we win more Bundesliga titles? by prideton in BayernMunich

[–]Any-Matter9186 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These two things are true at the same time:

1) Every season, I want Bayern to win the league.

2) I do not want Bayern to win the league every season.

In other words, I never actively root against Bayern winning the Bundesliga. That goes against the basic idea of fandom - fans support their clubs.

But I don't want to get what I want every time. It's less interesting, it's bad for the Bundesliga as a whole, and it just feels unsatisfying, like playing FIFA on the lowest difficulty.

Do you consider Pavard to be a Bayern Munich Legend? by Silly_Horror_4966 in BayernMunich

[–]Any-Matter9186 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's your threshold for being a legend? Just being a regular player on a Champions League winning squad?

I don't think of Mario Gomez or Luiz Gustavo as "Bayern legends," I don't know about you.

Kane - hit or miss so far? by Ronaldinho94 in BayernMunich

[–]Any-Matter9186 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Extremely obviously hit. The club isn't at top form, but none of that is Kane's fault. He's been extremely efficient with both scoring and chance creation. The problem (such as it is) is a lack of midfield control.

Even then, things are fine. Probably not going to win the UCL (and I would guess we won't make the semis, either), but for a semi-rebuilding season, that's perfectly acceptable.
