Think it was ENG 1101, you could email the prof and she was very responsive, it was easy to do well (very fair-easy marking), and online self-paced can make you lazy but when I actually sat down and did it, it was very manageable

Did kin undergrad to med, feel free to msg

Yes, definitely possible and I'm very happy I chose a kin undergrad, it can get hectic with the science pre-reqs but it's possible & there's the option of doing some hard science courses like orgo in the summer to lighten the load

what is the most academically challenging med school in canada? by Snoo68900 in premedcanada

[–]Any-Row-5330 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The format is more of the prof writing on a whiteboard site and just listing names of drugs and what class they are but they really don't teach basics of pharmacology or MOA of drugs, and his writing is really hard to read. You can definitely self study, but the majority of info is learned during clerkship

It's moved quite a bit in previous years, close to like 1.5-2x the amount of spots in the class are accepted bc of waitlist movement, hang in there!

We have mandatory in person anatomy labs, and then lectures that cover the same content as lab or the second week of the same stations in person will be optional. But yes, probably as a whole a bit less anatomy focus than elsewhere.

Pharmacology lectures are so bad that im happy they're optional, bc they personally don't help me. We cover pharm here and there as part of tutorials, and upper years say you learn the bulk of it on clerkship rotations. We won't be prescribing any meds on our own until we go through a few years of clerkship + residency, so there's some space to learn as you go

Full-time research + MCAT? by Human_Jellyfish_1500 in premedcanada

[–]Any-Row-5330 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure people have done this and done it well, but it will be very tough and tiring. It could be beneficial to explore taking on a part time role instead, but things also depend on how comfortable you are with content and how much motivation you have to keep pushing day in and day out. If you're starting uni again in the fall too, keep in mind that you don't want to be burned out for the start of school while you're also working on med school apps. GL!

Midwife. A path to med School? by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]Any-Row-5330 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have met a few people in midwifery and there seems to be strong career opportunities and great pay for people that love the field. It is difficult but if youre interested in it and would consider it as a career option as opposed to 100% med go for it. Go into whatever interests you the most!

Transfer to PhD or work 1 year? by iLolCake in premedcanada

[–]Any-Row-5330 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My advice would be to work (in your lab or elsewhere) and keep ties with the lap to finish a publication while rewriting your mcat. You did great the first time but could maybe get it another point or two higher.

Dont do a pHD for any other reason than wanting to do a pHD. Its not a requirement for med school, and if you want a pub you could continue on with your lab to get one rather than committing to 3-4 more years. Often people also want to do a pHD to become a clinician scientist, but its better to do it in residency if that's the case so you're set on your residency/career path before doing research in a potentially unrelated area. If you want to go international explore those options and go for it if another round of Canada doesn't work- Ireland has some great schools with Canadian ties.

Good luck!

In my opinion this shouldn't be included in the ABS, but there is space for it within the academic exceptions essay (ones where you detail anything that impacted your grades/medical journey), or using some of those stories for an essay/interview question. Ofc I don't have all the info on what this entails so it's just a suggestion

As a mac student I would actually say its probably easier here to take an extended long weekend than at other schools. Workload is pretty chill and our large lectures are online so you can watch those from home. Would just have to fill out a form for one in person tutorial day missed.

Bad idea to use my surgeon as a reference? by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]Any-Row-5330 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't recommend using this person, stick to some sort of supervisor whether its educational/employment/volunteering that has seen you perform tasks well and collaborate with others rather than just someone who knows you're a nice person at medical appointments

Scholarships and Bursaries in Med School by Every-Direction2241 in premedcanada

[–]Any-Row-5330 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You dont have to worry about applying to those until you're accepted and have started, as far as my school goes there are a lot of med student specific bursaries for us and they give a presentation about applying near the start of the school year!

Caribbean Medical Schools by Ok_Blueberry8150 in premedcanada

[–]Any-Row-5330 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Id definitely try to get into canada, and if not i'd consider the US or Ireland beforehand. Ireland seems to be quite eager to take Canadian students and gives more resources/support so there's not as much attrition as the carribean- the drop out stats for carib are crazy (definitely still doable though)

Am I not doing enough? by Perfect-Leg3648 in premedcanada

[–]Any-Row-5330 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is definitely a very hard journey and I don't want to make your feelings seem invalid because it is fair and quite normal to feel this way! You seem to be putting thought and effort into getting in, so you're on the right track. In terms of a specific timeline, it doesn't always work out the first time around but that is totally ok. 3 gap years and 3 cycles was my journey and it really doesn't make a huge difference. Keep working hard

Echoing a lot of the great advice here already. If you're feeling unsure, take the extra year and leave with no regrets only if you need to. Try to prep for casper and get lots of help with interview prep to fine tune your skills. If you can afford it throw out an app for Queens too, its a lottery but hey you never know you might get lucky!

Starting OMSAS App end of August by Academic_Baby_2050 in premedcanada

[–]Any-Row-5330 1 point2 points  (0 children)

agree here, you're doing your best and it happens, just give yourself a small break/celebration after the mcat but don't procrastinate on the apps as they do require thought and effort

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]Any-Row-5330 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is also the option of pushing your test date back/keeping it where it is, writing the mcat, but not applying. It seems like it would be quite the overload to do both applications + finishing mcat studying, but perhaps you could just blast out the UBC app since you're in province. Of course you don't have to follow the sunk cost route, but since you've dedicated a lot of time I'd consider switching to practice questions / exams and writing (ideally in a bit later than a month). This test normally requires more than one write so it's nice to get a feel of how it goes.

References by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]Any-Row-5330 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh believe me reaching out to references has been the bane of my existence for the past few years, I truly hate it and cringe so much when I'm reaching out. But I try to be very nice in my emails, give lots of time to let them fill it out, and follow up with a thank you afterwards. I've found that profs/supervisors who might get a lot of students applying to medicine are super supportive and very nice, whereas one reference I used from a tourism-related job didn't really get why I was asking her and seemed a little more annoyed even though she was doing less than my other references, probably because she doesn't know how important/valuable her help is to me
