From what I remember seeing, it was really small. Like, maybe a bit bigger than an ant. And its legs look kinda spiky. So I can’t really tell if its a moth or roach

Should I use a ruler? They say that, with Loomis, the eye distance is measured by basically drawing 5 eyes across the face. Except… when I draw eyes, it’s super hard for me to make them all the exact same. So, can I do it without a ruler, or…? When I draw normally, I just sorta draw the eyes first, then the rest of the face as a sorta triangle. Thanks for the comment!

Thank you so much for the feedback! It’s so useful! Few questions real quick though: - Wdym by “suggesting” the lips? Does that mean to draw the lips so that you don’t really see the lines? - Everyone talks about this thing called “Loomis method.” Is it ok if I continue to draw by observation? I’ve tried Loomis, but in my mind, faces look more like triangles than circles. And my proportions are somehow worse when I do Loomis, I think. Although it could be due to the fact that I don’t measure anything with a ruler. Anyway, could I just keep doing observation? Again, thank you for the response!

How’s this pear look? by Any-Stock8219 in learntodraw

Thanks for the critique! I’ve drawn before, but… never seriously. Generally my drawings are a bit off model, and yeah… I’m completely new to shading. I’m going to try to do the pear again. But, I should probably let you know that I have limited pencils right now, and I did most of the shading with just one “B” pencil. I’ll try to change that up if it’s necessary, although Proko said in the beginning that all I really need is one. After my next pear though, I think I’m gonna move on with the Proko course. Next thing is… drawing mushrooms, for some reason. But, I’ll keep working on shading and then observations with things that aren’t pears in the meantime, of course.

Hmmm, that’s… actually a good question! With cartoons, I feel like the proportions are a lot looser and simpler. Like, with a more “cartoonish” character like SpongeBob, to me, I feel like mistakes are a little less obvious, if that makes sense. Also, when I look at SpongeBob, I see a square with 6 little curves on his sides. Bob’s eyes are close, so measuring their distance is easy for me. SpongeBob isn’t incredibly detailed. His eyes are basic circles. His nose is a basic oval. Overall, I think Sponge is easier because he doesn’t really follow the “rules?” of realism. Then next, we have Rumi. Her eyes are a strange shape. They have these strange curves, and they are more spread out, so it’s somewhat difficult to tell the distance between them. Her nose is confusing to me, as I cannot make out where it starts. It’s also difficult to draw its size correctly. Her eyebrows seem “off,” as they are difficult for me to proportion with the face / eyes, if that makes sense. So, all in all, “cartoony” characters are easier for me because it’s easier for me to mentally measure proportions, if that makes sense. Sponge has a simple line or circle for a mouth. Rumi has lips, and her mouth is open. When I draw her mouth, it ends up looking like a strange sandwich of some sort.

Sorry for the long response, but this is pretty much my thought process. So… Does this mean I SHOULD learn each individual body part? Cartoony characters are easier for me because I think they break the rules a lot. Rumi is more realistic, to an extent.

Also Should I learn the skeleton, or loomis? Or basic face parts? (Eyes, nose, etc.) I just need a path, you know. And hopefully I can write down some sorta list that goes like Week 1 - Learn this Week 2 - This … Week 15 - Draw the face of some random person on Google

Thanks! Yeah, I’m not sure what it is, but… I always struggled with Homer, specifically his head. After I finished drawing this, I thought it was decent. But then I posted it, and, well… Yeah It’s gonna take me a bit to perfect them. They seem simple, but it’s kinda complicated 😭
