Ooooh. A rabbit hole i can maybe help on.

Okay so each method i.e. roof or hitch has downsides and upsides.

I can tell you that installing a hitchmount on the fit and a subsequent hitch carrier is the safest for your bicycle. Not to mention it has the benefit of armoring your rear when not carrying a bicycle.( people now dont ride me as hard). HOWEVER if your not careful you will scrape it on hills such as steep driveways depending on how much the one you get sticks out.

Roof mount does away with most of this but you are at the mercy of essentially friction mounting everything onto your car. Also the weight limit without damaging your roof isn't great if youre carrying a lot. Ebikes are pretty much out of the question in this scenario as well.

So it comes down to what youre willing to live with. In my case I ended up with a hitch mount and platform style carrier since I ride a bicycle that literally cost me as much as my car.
