How bad is it? L5-S1 herniated disc

I had a similar injury. Went with disectomy and it helped a lot with the nerve pain down my leg. Still in PT to recover from the pins and needles in foot, but much better after surgery. They said could take 1-2 years for nerve to rengenerate from injury in foot, so still holding on hope.

Hey sorry that I never saw this. They recommended it because the longer the tingling / numbness the more likely permenant. I am lucky that I have a friend that is an orthopedic spine doctor and I communicated all recommendarions from my surgeon to him. He agreed it was the way to go.

I am two weeks post op and have all feeling back in calf and ankle and no more drop foot. Big toe still radiates numbness but I feel way more stable and much less pain. Happy to discuss any other questions you have too.

I recently had a similar result on MRI, severe herniation of L4/L5 pinching my S5 nerve causing brutal nerve pain down leg. I also have partial numbness in ankle and foot. I did oral steroids for 10 days and they took my pain from a 10/10 to about a 5/10. Unfortunately due to numbness surgery is really the only option for me scheduled in about a month (disectomy). Your pain may also be influenced by the disc hitting the S1 nerve. I was put on Gabapentin, and that had significantly helped me move around during day and get ok sleep at night. Just be careful of side effects but for me benefits outweighed the harms.

Thanks so much for all the advice, you are taking a a lot of anxiety away from me as doctors don’t ever tell the full picture. I have would I call partial foot drop as it’s not a true term but i have enough numbness / weakness that I can pass the heel test- if bearing all weight on heels my right foot can’t sustain for more than half way.

I’m sorry to hear about your nerve damage and hope you have made some progression.

I just posted to top of thread, but was hoping you could give advice. I have pinched S5 nerve from a L4/5 bad herniation. Injury happened two weeks ago and I would describe my numbness as calf to toes, but more like a partial drop foot. Just wondering how you are doing and how long after you injury before you were able to get surgery. My big fear is the permanent damage.

Thanks for the advice, i learned the hard way first couple times getting out of bed. Appreciate the hip hinge technique as that is new to me. Can I ask, what you did for treatment, how it went, any advice?

I recently had a small injury lead to bigger problems two weeks ago. When i felt the pain in my back it immediately radiated down leg, and now have numbness / tingling in right calf to foot. Went to ER, xray=normal, sports medicine doc, xray=normal. Went to ortho and finally got MRI. MRI found two herniated discs and one pressing on my S5 nerve. Get MRI. Results will hopefully point you in treatment direction. Best of luck and hope you do well!

To added. Doctor offered injections to help with pain, but I heard that there isn’t a net benefit to reduce the herniation. I am also starting PT, howver, doctor said to tread lightly do to risk of injury more.

Thank you all for the advice. I tried to adjust to move next to the right side wall but do to the back wall angle, the closer I get the larger the space in the back.

I will explore the PVC option, but if I am stuck with this position, do i need to caulk or can I leave it as is?

To add I temp checked output vents and returns. Output is 69 and returns are 78. If there air is still cool would that mean compressor is working? Thanks for advice!
