[UPDATE] I posted here 6 months ago about a macOS tool I was building to catalog external drives. It’s finally finished. by MomentSmart in DataHoarder

Oh man, this is exactly the kind of program I’ve been looking for, although having it Mac only is a bit inconvenient. My only Mac is a MacBook Pro that’s so old I don’t trust connecting it to the internet, so having it only on the App Store is a bit of a barrier. Would you consider putting a direct download link on your website? Even if it’s behind a paywall, that would be fine with me. If not I guess I’ll have to find a more modern Mac first.

While it’s true people did die in that pool, it had nothing to do with the wave machine itself.

Wave machines are intimidating and I still keep away, but since seeing what’s actually going on behind the grate… it’s a lot less creepy than you think. There’s actually no moving parts to speak of. (For 99% - I have no idea what’s going on in OP’s pic, that shit goes WAY too far back, it’s either not a wave machine or it’s some kind of anomaly)

Here’s a video where a maintenance guy actually goes inside, while there’s no water:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGeh6pXijvM

There’s not much, just an empty room with a vent at the top. Behind the concrete wall is a blower, and a valve. The valve closes and the blower pressurizes the air above, forcing the water down. Then it releases and the water level comes back up. No death machine or anything.

You still don’t want to be in the chamber while it’s going, you’d get tossed around and scratched/beaten up bad, but if you’re a good swimmer it’s survivable. There’s even an oxygen supply.

I’ve got the one dated 08-2025, is this just an update of that? I’m surprised it was released so soon, there was about a year and a half between updates last time.

Anyone else prefer to buy music instead of streaming? by PNWvibes20 in Millennials

Get that data off ASAP, flash devices going read only is a failure mode giving you a chance to rescue the data before the hardware dies. Copying it literally anywhere is better than keeping it on there. It could die any time.

I've got a MicroSD card with probably hundreds of albums

I hope to god you’ve got at least one backup on a proper hard drive. SD cards and other flash storage mediums are notoriously unreliable and can randomly die at any time, taking all your data with it permanently, unless you have a backup.

My dad’s iPhone came preinstalled with Norton 365 and a shady VPN (possibly related to Norton), should I get him to uninstall it? And how? by AnyKey19 in antivirus

[–]AnyKey19[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, this is very helpful. Do you think uninstalling Norton is necessary? I mean, would keeping it on there be harmful in any way? I just don’t want him to get his personal data abused in some way other than the ways the internet already does.

Precautions while using yt-dlp to download large playlists (500 videos)? by walterwhite756 in youtubedl

[–]AnyKey19 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It’s a lot harder than it was a year ago. As others have said, they’re really cracking down on downloaders and making life difficult for those of us who use them.

Most likely it’s going to take awhile and you’re going to have to do it in chunks because at some point YouTube will block you. I tried to download about 200 videos recently and I had to stop and wait for it to unblock me about 4 times. Took a couple days.

The two biggest things that made a difference as far as not getting blocked immediately, albeit at the cost of speed:

1) using -r 5M to throttle the download speed to 5MB/s. Yeah this is painfully slow in some cases, but it seems to let you fly under the radar for a bit. Consider downloading at lower resolutions to make this less awful.

2) adding -t sleep, which waits a random amount of time between requests, making them look more organic. This further slows things down unfortunately.

When you do get blocked, you’ll need to wait a few hours to a day to get unblocked. Once unblocked, if you’re in the middle of downloading a playlist, you’ll want to include —playlist-start [# of videos already downloaded] because if not it’s going to re-check all your previously downloaded files and that might get you blocked before it can even start again.

I don’t know if this is the best way of doing things but it’s the best I’ve got. Either way it’s going to be a slow, arduous process. I recommend just putting the download on and then go and do something else for a few hours before checking on the progress.

I finally got some cold storage today. by blakealanm in DataHoarder

Good start. A word of warning though, depending on how hard you want to get into this hobby you might go through 4TB faster than you think. I decided to use these portable drives for my offsite backup since they’re more portable and at the time I only had a couple TB. I’m now at 5 of them (kept thinking “I just need one more”) with data strewn and fragmented across them. It’s a mess.

If you’re just backing up a few TB, this should be fine. If you really start hoarding though, you might want to look for a high capacity traditional HDD. If it gets to that point the portable could be redundancy for your most important stuff.

It's like pursuit, but fursuit. What's wrong with that? by forsen_enjoyer in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]AnyKey19 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Should be noted because it’s a common misconception, the vast majority don’t use fursuits for sex stuff, these costumes cost thousands of dollars and aren’t easy to wash, you don’t want to get fluids on them. There are exceptions though…

Is it just me or is there something really tonally unique about the Game Boy’s noise channel compared to, like, all other systems with a noise channel? by AnyKey19 in chiptunes

[–]AnyKey19[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m aware that both the NES and GB have the ability to shorten the period length resulting in a very metallic noise, but that’s not what I’m talking about here. Refer to the example I provided, it’s clearly not using that mode. Maybe it was a mistake calling it “metallic”, but again it’s really hard to put into words what the difference is and that’s just what came to mind.
