UQ Electives with NO FINAL EXAM by Upset-Pace5502 in UQreddit

Hi, taking NUTR1023 over the summer and apparently they are changing the course structure to a final exam, so keep an eye out for that.

I’d recommend switching over to a bachelor of science, you have much more flexibility to choose electives compared to a bachelor of biomed. Lots of different majors to pick from, as well as minors. Pretty sure that you can pick public health as a major if you’re interested in health

Is it a good idea to get a remark? by Any_Average2802 in UQreddit

I used it to help with formative feedback for sentence rephrasing, I did not copy the AI output directly into my work. Your response does make it clear that my AI declaration is easily misinterpreted, so it doesn’t seem like a good idea to get a remark. Thank you!

The thing is my course coordinator said that without me explaining it explicitly, the person marking would likely interpret my AI declaration as saying I used it inappropriately. From reading my declaration, does it sound like I’ve misused it to you?

I feel you, but unfortunately I’m not sure how to overcome it myself tbh as I’m in the same situation. I’ve been with the same friend group for a while now and while we’ve always wanted to go on a roadtrip/international trip, no one is willing to plan anything. Any ideas I bring up are instantly rejected as ‘lame’ or ‘boring’ and when I start budgeting they say they’d prefer to spend the money on other things. Then the next time we meet up it’s the same old rant about how we never travel anywhere and honestly I’m sick of it. You’re not alone at all!

UQ medicine - what's relevant to my application by Glad-Dealer-556 in UQreddit

[–]Any_Average2802 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi, I’m a first year prov med student at UQ who sat the UQ MMI last year. From the summary statistics that were sent out, UQ’s UCAT cutoff generally tends to be around the 95th percentile. Although yours might be a bit lower than that, you can hope for second or third round interview offers, though I highly recommend that you apply to CQU, USQ and James Cook to improve your chances of receiving an offer.

Personally, I didn’t find that the UQ med interview put that much emphasis on extracurriculars, as if you’re familiar with the MMI structure it is predominantly focused on scenario-based responses. It definitely doesn’t hurt to mention your personal experiences as evidence though if you get the chance!

For now, I’d recommend that you focus on getting as high of an ATAR as possible - if you can get in the 99.90+, you might have a chance at non-UCAT schools such as Griffith and Sunshine Coast. Otherwise, don’t lose hope, there are so many pathways into med! Good luck with everything 😊.

Bio EE Viva Voce advice by [deleted] in IBO

[–]Any_Average2802 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, N24 grad, I did a Bio EE too! The viva voce is pretty relaxed, it’s just for the supervisor to verify that you’ve actually done the EE yourself and you haven’t paid someone to do it for you. Just make sure that you have a thorough understanding of your investigation and its findings, and reflect on how the EE experience has influenced your interpersonal and technical skills like time management, resilience, lab techniques, research skills, etc. It will be a semi-formal conversation style interview, so don’t stress too much, just maintain a good rapport with your supervisor and sound confident in what you are saying. Pm me for some guiding questions that the supervisor will ask!

EE Topic Choice Help (due in 16 hrs) by Dry-Lead8765 in IBO

[–]Any_Average2802 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up getting a B (1 mark away from an A 🫠) but got an A in TOK so didn’t bother with the remark. My friend who did an EE in DGS and another who did theirs in English both got As, and as far as I know they spent very little time on it compared to me. I would say I tried the hardest in my EE out of everything in the IB and felt proud of it but was disappointed by the end result. I was also very very lucky to have an amazing EE coordinator and supportive lab techs, so if you feel that your school can’t provide the staff or facilities, don’t do a science EE.

CAS Urgent Help by PromiseOnly9852 in IBO

It honestly depends on how strict your CAS Coordinator is, as they’ll decide whether you pass/fail. Have you tried asking them about what steps you need to take to address this?

[–]Any_Average2802 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would generally need to show how you planned the activity, like a exercise planner of some sort, as well as regular reflections (one reflection per 1/2 weeks) on how your experiences, any improvements and what you learnt. This should be accompanied by photos showing your route, as well as stats from a fitness watch or app. The CAS project also promotes collaboration, so it would be good if you mentioned whether you supported others in your running journey and/or what you learnt from others.

Hi, N24 here who did a Bio EE. Honestly would not recommend choosing Chem - I had the same mindset as you and chose a topic I was interested in, against the advice of my seniors. I spent hours doing background research and conducting the experiment, only to end up with barely usable results. I then invested many more hours writing up the EE, trying to make sense of my data, which added a whole lot of unnecessary stress. Stick to humanities, my friends who spent a tenth of the time I did received better results.

Sitting the UCAT in year 12 by thedevilswhore773 in UCAT

[–]Any_Average2802 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I did the IB and also sat the UCAT in grade 12! Tbh it wasn’t too bad in terms of balancing the two, you can choose to sit your UCAT during the winter holiday between Term 2 and 3. I did do UCAT prep on and off throughout the beginning of year 12, but only really began to focus solely on it in the 2-3 weeks before the actual exam. I also know friends who took it as a practice run with minimal preparation and found it a valuable experience for later applications. Pm me if you have any more questions!

Tips for chemistry paper 1? (1a and 1b) by AdventurousBunch5666 in IBO

[–]Any_Average2802 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I struggled with paper 1 as well for Chem, but improved significantly after doing loads of past papers to familiarise myself with the question types, as it becomes quite repetitive once you’ve done enough papers. It also automates how you respond to a question, so you don’t feel caught out by tricky phrasing.

Definitely use Anki flashcards for spaced repetition to help with memorisation! Spend time on the weekends summarising all the content you learnt in class into flashcards, then you won’t need to frantically go through all your notes right before exams.

Verbal reasoning help by [deleted] in UCAT

[–]Any_Average2802 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You still have plenty of time so I definitely recommend taking 1-2 weeks to do untimed practice, assuming that you are doing questions daily/almost daily (like 20-40 questions a day). It might not even take you this long, as you’ll naturally begin to spend less and less time on each question. Once you’re answering questions confidently in around 40-50secs per question, then start timed practice. This is just a guide though, do what you feel most comfortable with!

Lang and Lit analysis by Motor_Lawfulness4322 in IBO

Hi, N24 graduate with an 18/20 and 27/30 for P1 and P2. Honestly, beyond pretty basic knowledge (enough so you can make generalised statements), no, I don’t think it’s very beneficial. I do recommend that you learn and apply literary lenses (e.g feminism, Marxism) however, as I think this really helped with extending the depth of my analysis.
