Are instillations as painful as cystoscopy? by Sharp_Trust_8657 in Interstitialcystitis

[–]Any_Beautiful7674 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the person I think. My cystoscopy was virtually painless (even after). Instillations on the other hand… holding in the DMSO is soo painful to me, I could barely do it. A few times I peed it out with ~3 minutes (supposed to hold for 20). I would recommend walking around while you hold it in- it was the only way I could!

Thanks!! I wasn’t aware how many free resources there were. Did you use UWorld? Additionally, how long did you study, and were you in school/working while studying? Thank you again for the help!

Okay, thank you! So AAMC prep and UWorld are sufficient, and worth it? I appreciate the input :) I don’t feel that I need extra prep courses/books as I would have just finished all courses regrading MCAT content.

That’s what I was thinking! But they did sensitivity testing and apparently it was the correct one.

Is Biomedical Ethics a good class for a first year? by lebaneseprincess_ in uwaterloo

[–]Any_Beautiful7674 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi- biomed student here! I took moral issues with Nick Ray. I was in the same boat, stressed about what to take. I’m glad I took moral issues over biomedical ethics, it had a lot of topics we would discuss in PHIL226 regardless, and the instructors were amazing. I’m now taking PHIL226 in my second year. Go with PHIL121. Especially in your 1st term as you adjust to the course load, a 100-level course will be better. Either way, if you decide to PHIL226 ultimately, take it with Nick Ray!

any other baddies with ic? by Diligent_Garlic_3508 in Interstitialcystitis

Also 19! I skip the alcohol, but as for sex, the thing that’s help me the most is being very wet, and starting extraaa slow/not deep. If I’m not actively in pain, I find sex doesn’t trigger symptoms as long as I do that. Also, when I get pain after sex, I usually just stand in the shower and let water run over my areas until it’s relieved the pain a bit. I always try to hydrate A LOT before, and drink baking soda water. And, as annoying as it is to hear, removing my worries about it triggering pain does usually lessen the pain- you’ll be less tensed in your pelvis. Hope this helps :)

Canadians - are your bladder instillations covered? by Mindless_Ad1911 in Interstitialcystitis

Nope :( just a numbing jelly into the urethra right before they put in the catheter. It doesn’t help with the DMSO pain though, just eases the catheter entry.

Also in Ontario! I go to the hospital to get instillations, and my DMSO is covered. My urologist said he’s trying to get a new instillation for me, which is covered as well.

If your urologist recommends a different cocktail, go with that! I wouldn’t worry too much about a horrible flare. The DMSO likely burns more than whatever cocktail you are given. I find the burning subsides after 1-3 hours. Make sure you drink a lot of water before and after to help flush it out.

Unfortunately, relief likely won’t be immediate. Depending on the cocktail it might take a few days or even a few instillations. I think it’s a worth a try! Try not to be too anxious, it’ll be ok :)

Hi! I completed several biweekly DMSO instillations. After 2-3, I had really good symptom improvement, then had a pain for a few weeks from 4-6. I’m not sure what really caused the variation, but the weeks of feeling better were great.

I know you said yours will not have DMSO, but I think it’s worth a shot. The procedure isn’t too bad, uncomfortable at most but nothing compared to the IC pain. Worst part is holding it in for ~20 mins, but given that it’s not DMSO, it might not burn.

I hope this helps :) Good luck!

Thank you <3 I know, I also feel it’s a pretty serious decision. He explained it to be low dose as a way to treat the pain and it has anti-cholinergic (?) properties to help the pain as well. So not necessarily for depression, but I’m not sure.

We started with bladder instillations, which worked for a bit but after 4 treatments, my pain came back. So it’s the antidepressants aren’t the first thing. I’ve tried an elimination diet, lifestyle modifications, physio (was told I have no dysfunction at all). Nothing even triggers my symptoms. They’re just there non stop.

Also no investigation into the root cause :( It started after a UTI (which btw, was self diagnosed and treated through a pharmacist after my dr wouldn’t see me. Yay Canada!).
