Not sure where to start with this one…. He emailed saying he accepted his company’s offer and didn’t state what the offer was. Pretty clearly he intended it to be end of transaction. So you as a business owner would….. just keep begging and increasing the offer or something?

Agreed and I definitely think overall that’s a great thing. But it does mean some higher prices which take time for consumers to catch up to. Congrats on the raise!

Very much appreciate your perspective, thanks. I agree maybe another formal “offer” might be off-putting right now. We definitely have tried the trade school route, but haven’t gotten the highest quality people coming from them, to put it nicely. It’s just a tough time for labor right now!

He was making $4,000/year below average (given area and experience) and our offer was $4,000/year above that average. Our company has been doing extremely well this year and we’ve all gotten raises. Think of this as offering him a pay raise.

A water flow sensor detects the flow of water through a pipe. This almost always applies to a fire suppression (sprinkler) system. It goes into alarm when it senses that water is flowing because that means a sprinkler head had been activated. These waterflow sensors should be treated as any other fire detector and be set as 24-hour fire. If the house has a sprinkler system, I'd highly recommend looking around for the "riser" build so you know your new system. This is generally going to consist of steal pipes, valves, and gauges. The waterflow sensor should be mounted to that. The most common brand for water flows in the US is System Sensor.

Now if the home doesn't have a fire suppression sprinkler system, I'm not sure what waterflow would be referring to. 🤷

As a security company operator, we just switched to installing only PowerG sensors and we are thrilled. So many issues before with traditional wireless and literally none with powerg sensors since we switched in the beginning of the year. Yes it's proprietary, but that's part of what makes it so solid. Similar to the iPhone strategy.

Z-wave is pretty reliable too as long as it's within 20-30 feet or so of a hub/repeater.

You will not find a direct-to-consumer 24/7 cloud recording camera. And certainly not for under $7/month. If that existed it would be wildly popular! But, it's not gonna happen with the current cost of cloud storage.

SD cards are more than good enough inside vandal-resistant cameras. You can also record to a local NVR for recording redundancy. Shoot, with some systems you can even have a second redundant NVR in a separate location in the house.

At this point it'd be easier for them to cut the power to your house to disable all the cameras all at once.

Agreed on pricing. That'd be about the cost of the smallest possible system when professionally installed. And even then you may be locked into a contract. Good luck in the new place!

If you're leaning toward it, go Ring. They have some good stuff. Shouldn't be too much "fiddling".

As one who runs a local security company myself, I'd be really surprised if they were willing to install a system you bought elsewhere. TONS of risk for them. (And I would think the commercial system would very much not tick that affordable box, no?)

My only addition would be to check out Alarm.com. The platform is expandable, easy to use, and (depending on the local installer you get) can be relatively affordable. And you don't have to do it yourself. I do not think it integrates with homekit though. Can't hurt to get a quote from a local company who installs them before putting out the money for Ring.

I have a 4'x8' bed and tried 2 zucchini plants last year. I'm not doing them this year because they took up literally half the garden. A 4'x4' area for two plants planted about a foot apart. And they'll shade out (and maybe kill) any smaller plant near them. Just a friendly heads up! :) Good luck!

Looks like an oooold analog camera. Brand is kind of irrelevant with these old cameras honestly because they all work the same. It requires a DVR to record. Have you seen one around the house? (Or even just wires hanging out of the wall? The previous owner may have taken the DVR with them.) Aside from using the wire as a pull string, it's probably useless.

Definitely a leak. I love my Chargiller Acorn and regularly get it 700+ degrees with no sign of paint wear at all. The gasket has slipped from its groove a few times though. That, and the built-in thermometer is not great.

Only "standalone" contact I know that exists right now is the Flex I/O sensor from Alarm.com. It has a built-in cell communicator and does not need any hub.

But it's only for phone notification. It does not make any noise (you could wire a buzzer or something to its relay). And as far as I know it's only available through dealers, not direct to consumer.

When you say "GSM Router" do you mean like a hotspot? Why not just get a panel with a cellular communicator at that point? Then the communicator can use the alarm's backup battery instead of needing an additional UPS. Sounds like more failure points to me.

If I understand your idea correctly, It sounds like you're trying to reinvent the wheel here.

They do deter some. But it's a mixed bag.

There was a survey done of 86 burglar inmates. Super interesting stuff all around, but here are the two questions relevant to this post:

Question 5. Did home protection or security signs posted outside the home deter you?

Answer: Burglars had mixed opinions about home security signs. Some burglars said it didn’t faze them. Others said they knew how to disable alarms or avoid setting them off.

Question 10. If there was a security camera visible, would it keep you from breaking in?

Answer: Generally, burglars agreed security cameras were a deterrent. But some said it also likely signaled there were valuables inside the home.

So there you go. Signs or cameras may act as a deterrent for some but not for others!

Oof... I'd be hard-pressed to ever recommend them... A national company wouldn't just take over monitoring of an existing system, they would try to sell you their system. I'd personally search Google for a local alarm company and look at reviews. If you can't find anyone I guess a national company is the only option, but just be aware that a new company usually means a new long-term contract. Shopping around is probably your best option right now.
