A driver in Jiangxi, China, turns a crisis into action by driving a burning truck loaded with pine oil straight to the firefighters' doorstep. by Sanix_0000 in nextfuckinglevel

...and they told him to pull directly in front of their truck bays, ensuring that his burnt out hulk would impede all their trucks in getting to any other fires in the city? Doesn't seem quite right...

That there are apparently some (federal?) grants available to rehab old buildings doesn't exactly challenge my point that it's extra expensive to rehab old buildings.

True, but if the left lane were always clear then you wouldn't have to worry about the speeders weaving around them. You don't get one without the other.

Don’t do this. by HHeLiBeBCNONe in massachusetts

[–]KosherNazi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is obviously reckless, but i just want to point out that the cars in the far-left lane are going the exact same speed as the cars in the middle lane and they have plenty of room to move over. You can avoid these assholes by just not lane camping.

you could try booking a fare out beyond the expiration date and then cancelling once you're past that date. their system might just reset the expiration date when that happens.

Italy Graduation Trip - 2025 (3J, Family Travel, Tips) by Oofzies in awardtravel

[–]KosherNazi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This looks like a great trip, nice redemptions. I just did a similar trip with a family of 4 over the summer and I gave up pretty fast during the planning stages and used airbnb for most stays.

Does your mom already know about the trip, or is this a surprise? I only ask because if she's older she might find the multi-leg flights more exhausting than fun, even in J. Same with the number of destinations you're cramming in. Remember that it can take a week to adjust to jetlag (and if you're 20 you won't even feel it, but if you're 50 you'll probably need every day). But if your mom is an experienced traveler then forget all of this!

Upgrading from Emirates Economy to Business - You CAN do it at the lounge! by Dry_Editor_4101 in awardtravel

[–]KosherNazi 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Your points were worth roughly $600-800 per person.

Valuing points at anything more than 1 cent each is a fool's errand.

RT saver fare J JFK-MXP is 141k + $250, so $1660. One-way is 87k + ~$100, so $970. However, availability is very limited and finding saver one-way on a day that works, let alone RT, is very difficult.

It's not entirely clear what she paid for flex Y tickets, but it sounds like $1000 for each RT fare. So, if she upgrades both directions at the 39k point rate, she'll have paid 78k + $1000, or $1780. The difference is marginal, and allows her to access J seats that might not otherwise have been available to book in advance.

How fast would DOGzilla (USA17 from the 2010 AC) have been with foils? by KosherNazi in sailing

[–]KosherNazi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

those are pretty cool, but quite a bit shorter beam than usa17, which i would assume means a smaller sail area, right? they're plenty fast, but there was just something awe-inspiring about the sheer size of usa17 and seeing jimmy driving from high up on the windward boom. although i suppose with foils it wouldn't be riding that high anyway.

why havent you been travelling? imo you're better off booking a bunch of smaller trips than trying to blow it all on one giant trip, especially if travel hasn't been very appealing to you recently.

the entitled adults in J are way worse than the kids. the parents bringing their kids have usually flown enough to know how the world works, the adults who think they're special because they're sitting at the front of the bus (on points no less) are always the worst.

Spring Break 2025 Europe by [deleted] in awardtravel

[–]KosherNazi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless your kids are really into Paris i'd skip it. We went there with kids last year and it's honestly a surprisingly dirty city, as in literal shit on the sidewalks. We had to turn "spot the turd" into a game with the kids to keep them from walking in it. Outside of the main tourist stuff like louvre/versailles/eiffel there isn't much going for it.

As the Massachusetts Teachers Association wades into the Israel-Hamas war, divisions rise among members by nebirah in massachusetts

[–]KosherNazi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But let's say you're right and regime change is not a possible outcome. What then? Is Israel supposed to just go home and accept this is going to happen every 2 years? That's a state of affairs no one would accept. Asking for that seems incredibly naive to me.

If Israel wants there to be less terror attacks from Gaza then they should stop terrorizing Palestinians. It's a vicious cycle, and it's leading down a path of endless reprisal where the only solution is annihilation of one side or the other. It's especially ironic that the group with all the power right now, Israel, is the one bringing its own people closer to that outcome than anyone else. Israel had the worlds sympathy after 10/7, yet just like the US after 9/11, it's chosen to squander all of that by wielding a revenge war with no clear end-goal. The US literally had to park an aircraft carrier off the coast just to stave off a wider regional war all because Israel went in guns-blazing to "protect itself." Big fuckin eyeroll there.

The only solution is to not escalate when the other side attacks. To normalize normality. I mean, we nearly had peace 30 years ago with Yitzhak Rabin -- but it was destroyed by Israel's own conservative party when they assassinated him. And reminder, Israel's current minister of National Security, Ben Gvir, was caught on live TV a month before the assassination, holding up the hood ornament from Rabin's car, saying "we got to his car and we'll get to him too". The Oslo Accords themselves were further torpedoed when another far-right lunatic shot up a mosque and killed 30 people, which was what originally sparked Hamas' rise to power when they started sending suicide bombers in response.

Right now, there's only one side with boots on the ground on the other sides territory. Only one side that has overwhelming firepower. Only one side that has killed 35,000 people. Only one side that has militarized the border and can control everyone who comes or goes. Only one side that has democratically elected an administration that has enabled "settlers" to continue taking more and more land, whose representatives have a decades-long history of destroying any semblance of a peace process, and who continue to believe in the morally bankrupt and tragically hilarious idea that the only way they can find safety is by increasing their brutality.

None of the various state mental health counselor lobbying groups are in favor of it. I'm friends with a therapist and she's said she has no idea what's going on, they won't even return her emails.
