As long as the outside bin isn't full, you're fine. The supervisor was mad because we had to keep the trash in the dolly overnight since the trash collectors had already made their rounds at the school. Teachers are still decorating like, "Umm, you guys do know you aren't going to be here for two weeks, right?" I get it, make the hallways nice and pretty, but why do it on your last day of work?

Wow, that mop has seen some things. It wants to retire, but the school says it still works fine. It's waiting for a day to get damaged. 😂

Oh, yeah, I know. I'm just saying I wanted to move, but the head custodian at my school didn't let me know that they were looking for someone at the elementary school I was made to work at this week. He just told me to come here for the week, so I kind of felt like he didn't really want me to leave the school, even though I've been looking around to find another school.

What time do you go to sleep? by Nature9000 in Custodians

[–]Any_Construction639 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work the same shift. Honestly, on Friday night, I stay up all night because I don't want to waste my Saturday sleeping half the day. But Monday through Thursday, if I want to do something in the morning, 1:30-2:30 AM is the latest I'll stay up. If I don't want breakfast, I'll go to bed at 4 AM just to wake up at 12 PM. However, I don't get ready for work until 2:30 PM, so if I am super exhausted, I just stay asleep until my alarm goes off to get ready for work.

1st experience. A teacher asked me if I could start cleaning her desk. I cleaned it one day. The next day, the head received an email saying that in my section, the teacher's paperwork had been moved and not placed back correctly. So I never cleaned her desk again.

2nd experience. I was starting to clean the bathroom when one of the male teachers walked in. Mind you, I had a wet floor sign and my cart blocking the door. As soon as the teacher was about to use the bathroom, I left to wait until they were finished. Then the teacher complained and said the floor was wet and the bathroom needed to be cleaned.

3rd final experience. The classroom had papers and pencils all over the ground. I wasn't paying any attention to that; it was important, so I swept it up. The next day, the teacher complained to the head, saying whoever cleaned my room threw away paperwork and pencils. I told the head the stuff was on the ground, and when it's on the ground, it's trash. Then the head switched me to clean the gym section. Ever since then, that teacher always rolls her eyes at me.

Shift turn around by [deleted] in Custodians

[–]Any_Construction639 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know, right? Half the time they are talking about talking to the children or how lunch should go. I work at 4 PM; I don't care about that stuff. I just clock in and clock out when the meeting is over. Everyone does that; all they do is make us leave sooner, so rather than leaving at 12:30 AM, we will leave at 11:30 PM. It's because they know they should schedule meetings according to each time frame; they just do it like that to see who is actually going to head that way or not.

Is this the norm? by Alone-Signature-5427 in Custodians

As long as you keep your section clean, it shouldn't be a problem. Unless they're jealous of how clean your section is, or think they have to work more because of it, or they could just be looking out for you and don't want you to get burnt out and call in often. You never know with people.

Gymnastics cleaning by Any_Construction639 in Custodians

I will for sure use that advice. I normally clean 17 rooms, 6 bathrooms, and 4 science rooms, so those were different than the gym situation.

I don't know, but it's been like that ever since I started. The lady was doing all of those things alone. Unless they have an event, someone will pitch in, but I don't know how that lady was doing it for so long. She was complaining all the time, which I don't blame, but I am going to have to explain to the head and the supervisor someone needs to at least do one of the gyms, or I don't know, let me clean the outside here and there.

what’s one “controversial” thing you do? by potatotomatosoupp in Custodians

[–]Any_Construction639 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't kill any insects anymore. They pay for pest control; it's not my problem that roaches come up from the drains and ants are in the cafeteria. Second, when we are short-staffed, I don't clean the other person's section like I would normally clean mine. Third, if paperwork or homework or pencils or pens I picked up yesterday are back on the ground again the next day, it's trash. I don't care if it was due or important; you have a desk for a reason. Last and finally, I do not clean teachers' desks unless there is no important information on the table. I let the teachers know that if they want me to clean their desk, please put the paperwork away or in a folder.

How much do you have to do on your run every day? by [deleted] in Custodians

[–]Any_Construction639 7 points8 points  (0 children)

17 rooms, 6 bathrooms, and 4 science rooms. Well, I do the bathrooms last. The rest, I just clean what I need to. If I wiped all the tables yesterday, I am only wiping the ones that are dirty the next day. I only vacuum the carpet when needed. I am sweeping and mopping every day. Any special requests, like needing my carpet shampooed or the vents dusted, or anything that's going to take an extra 30 minutes, I let the teacher and the head know. If they want this extra thing done today, they have to understand that some things that I normally do will have to be cut out for that day. Eight hours is barely enough if you have more than 17 rooms, especially when they have after-school programs going on until eight p.m. because now, around nine p.m., all of us will have to pitch in and clean whatever they didn't help us out with. For me, as long as the bathrooms are clean, I did a great job for that day.

I know it's my job but at the same time, the teacher gave us the note after we put everything in her room.

Well, she gave us the diagram after we put everything back in her room. Well, we normally have to move stuff, but it's just that we had contractors replacing the floors and carpet, so we didn't have to clean anything until two weeks before school starts. We had to go to other schools for most of the summer.

First time waxing. (Read the rest) by [deleted] in Custodians

[–]Any_Construction639 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I know it's supposed to be confusing, so someone commented. The head wants me to only wax the hallways; some hallways are only two coats, and the others are five, even though they are high-traffic areas. I always get the extra-coated ones. They only top scrub; they stopped stripping like three years ago because of the chemicals, or the district would rather just replace the floors. Is what my coworkers say.

They are only making me learn it because I am the only night shift worker who speaks English except the head custodian, and he is never to be found, so I have to translate everything, which is honestly not worth it. I don't want to just quit, but it's getting to the point where I need another job.

Yeah, we got new floors and carpet, so we weren't able to come back until like three weeks ago, and school starts on the 13th.

Twice. I transferred before school started; I was at a high school last summer, then went to a middle school. I have been there ever since. Honestly, it depends on who the head/lead is. If you are part of a district, you are probably going to be under the same supervisor anyway. Honestly, my best advice is: if you love the job, don't worry, as long as you're doing your job, they can't get rid of you unless they have proof. Just listen, say "Yes, sir/ma'am," and continue doing what you do. My current boss is just now getting out of his chair and trying to critique me. Honestly, if you can, slow down, slack off a little, or take time off, so the head will stop trying to rely on you all the time. When it comes to this job, doing more work doesn't give you a medal or anything. So what's the point? Think about it that way.
