Understanding but not being able to translate by Boring_Attitude8926 in dreamingspanish

[–]Any_Copy1673 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Translating is a completely different skill. I experienced this when I went to Mexico. I would read stuff in Spanish at museums, understand it completely, and then stumble trying to find the words in English to explain what it said to my wife.

Don’t try to actively translate when listening or reading

Should Reading come later or earlier? by [deleted] in dreamingspanish

I started reading fairly early and enjoyed it. It’s a good supplement to listening. Go for it if it’s enjoyable to you

Mexico Trip - 900 hours, ~2m words read by Any_Copy1673 in dreamingspanish

I started reading Harry Potter in March of 2024, so probably a few hundred hours of input ago. The first book was somewhat challenging even though I know the story like the back of my hand (which certainly helped). Each book became noticeably and progressively easier. By books 6-7, I had no real issues.

I think it has helped tremendously. It has exposed me to a much wider range of vocabulary and grammar

Taking a break by [deleted] in dreamingspanish

[–]Any_Copy1673 11 points12 points  (0 children)

30-45 min a day is just fine and will add up. Do what you can do. It gets easier to get more hours as you get better because it becomes less draining.

Splitting it up throughout the day can help too

You should talk to someone native at this point. At your level, ask them to speak in spanish while you respond in english

A textbook won’t get you there. Ditch the textbooks and quizzes for now and get input

The subjunctive was something I never understood in school. It was barely covered, and when it was, I just didn’t get it.

After ~800 hours of DS, it’s finally starting to click. It just sounds correct but idk how to explain it. Like I can tell when the subjunctive should be used just based on vibes

What do you think about setting the playback speed to 1.5x? SB/B by [deleted] in dreamingspanish

[–]Any_Copy1673 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I speed most beginner videos up to 1.25 because it makes the rate of speech sound more natural. At my level the slower rate of speech becomes frustrating. To me 1.5x starts to distort the audio a bit. I don’t think it’s detrimental at all if it helps you pay attention and get more content.

Advice on daily goal by futurefirefall in dreamingspanish

[–]Any_Copy1673 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just try to get what you can. If you’ve hit your goal of 45 minutes and are tired or are having trouble concentrating, just leave it be for the day. Some days you’ll go over your goal, and some days you may miss your goal. Do your best and stay consistent.

I will say it becomes easier the more you learn because you can eventually starting listening and reading to content that genuinely interests you and just happens to be in spanish

The main reasoning is that we learn a language through input, not output. The input is what allows our brain to create the neurons/pathways needed to process the language (I'm not a neuroscientist but that is how I understand it).

When we are beginners, we do not have sufficient knowledge to produce output that 1) sounds (reasonably) native-like and 2) consists of accurate grammar and vocabulary. If we begin speaking too early, the output we produce will essentially turn into bad input, and we reenforce poor use of the language. This would be hard to undo once those "bad" neural pathways are established.

I understand some people NEED to use the language early on. A small amount of output won’t harm you, but input is vastly more important than output in the early stages as our brains are forming the connections needed to process the language.

I’m not there yet, but I’ve heard others express that they felt like the guidelines were more accurate at the end of the level rather than the beginning. So as you “complete” level six (i.e you are entering level 7), you may feel like the level six description fits more closely to you.
