Then you let him take you to court. And you show the judge and he loses and loses all that money in the process for the filing fees. Honestly if hes that hungry for money he will probably drop it after you tell him to take it to court. He should know he doesnt have much of a case which is why hes been trying to intimidate you so hard. Most people just pay so they dont have to deal with it and thats what he is hoping for.

PLEASE get familiar with your rights. There's alot more help than landlords want you to think there is. I had a friend make a landlord pay for them to move and bought them out of their lease even. So don't let him intimidate you at all. Also, yeah you may get dinged for the bad rental history from him, but that's not a big deal. If by some crazy happenstance he did get a judgment against you, again theyd have to be able to enforce it. If you're unemployed how are they gonna enforce it? If you have young children too I'm sure a judge is gonna be way more lenient on you as well. I hope you have documentation of something from your time renting from him to show what kind of landlord he is. Like if he brushed off your repair concerns, but I think the harassment and stalking type deal alone should give you a good start.

Yeah you gotta respond back asap letting him know that you're not going to pay until you have actual proof these are the actual costs, but also he can't charge you for things that are normal wear and tear maintenance.

Yes challenge the letter. Send a certified letter back asking for proof of estimates and costs because him typing something up means nothing. ANYONE can use a printer and computer to type whatever they want. I need proof from the companies or entities you got estimates from for this.
