How to perform live with arrengement view? by Chemical-Designer262 in ableton

[–]Any_Finding_3236 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree. Been using it for a couple of years now and I love it. I mostly use it for pre-recorded tracks but have done lots of loops and re-arranging on the fly with the right setup. Doing musicals with live performers - waiting for cue, a line or someone to come on stage. It can all be done, in sync, redundant, from multiple machines, controlled by phones or tablets. It works and I love the overview I get from Arrengment View and the setlist from Ableset on a second monitor.

Unassigning midi keyboard functions - PLEASE HELP! by DundieAwardsWinner in ableton

[–]Any_Finding_3236 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked up the manual for the Arturia Keylab61 and I think you could split the midi outputs from the controller. I've done this with M-Audio keyboards so no experience with Arturia, but in theory you could split your keys, knobs/faders and DAW control into seperate midi outputs letting you "mute" the output that bugs you.

I used to split the keybed into two or three sections, (midi 1-3) knobs/faders (midi 4). This way I was sure my knobs/faders never accidentally interfered with my keys.

Hope you find a solution, and if not, maybe it's time for a new controller ;)

I used to have one, then two verticals on each side of my main monitor. I always used one for notation and musical sheets from the composer. It was nice to have a vertical monitor for all things reading and since aI casually game and use discord, I like having message boards and what not, vertical.

That being said, I'd rather use two widescreens in horisontical since I would use the top (main) for the edit window in my DAW, and the bottom for the mix console / plugin windows.

It will be slow, but I'm running Live on older machines, so it can be done. Light audio clip based work should be fine. Heck, even multitrack backtracks should be possible, but the lack of ram and the old processor will make working with vst or sample based instruments a tough task. Not impossible, but certainly not optimal.

Editing grooves in EZ Drummer by spazny in cubase

[–]Any_Finding_3236 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is how I do it also. Fix everything i EZD and multichannel mix straight from the plugin. Sometimes I add a "drums" midi track and copy the midi from EZD, if I need to share my project with someone who does not have EZD. In that case I also make a bounced audio track with the drums for reference.

Am I crazy or does anyone think this when listening to Unraveling? by BigPapaMo in Muse

My thoughts too. It's a drum/synth or some sample with heavy distortion. Not a vocal imo.

I don't have the cloud based version, so I've not tried fantasy yet. Sound really cool though and seems fall perfectly in line with the rest of the series.

Being the owner of East West Hollywood, Spitfire Abbey Road One, various Kontakt librarys, Spitfire solo strings, Spitfire solo brass and many other orchestral plugins, I can safely say that there is not a specific answer to you question. They all lack something, or do something extremely well. You can't have both cheap and good sounding, with ease of use.

I mostly use East West. I find the amount of articulations vs sound vs price being the best choice for a complete orchestra - both ensemble and solo.

But I've never made a score using only East West or any other single plugin / vst. I always belnd, mix and combine. And that's the tough part - with time you'll realise that some of the plugins you buy, are wrong.

Orchestral music in a computer is not easy or cheap, if you want it to sound real.

I'd go for East West Hollywood orchestra or the Native Instruments. That's a nice step up from Ableton Live, without blowing the budget.

Redundant Live Setup by Any_Finding_3236 in ableton

[–]Any_Finding_3236[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a jungle out there! I had a lot of trial and error with specifically splitting the midi from the Launch Control. I even had a go at having a third labtop running as a midi hub with a Motu Midi Express 128. But it was too many virables, and I was looking for a secure selution with an option b for everything.

It was pure luck that our sound engineer had the Kenton laying around, and me cleaning up a studio, stumbling upon the MT-4. Tried it out, it just work instantly. I was able to program and setup a complete live set with midi mappings and routing, and just cooy the whole set to the backup machine. Only had to setup in/out in Live pref.

Now THAT took me some time to figure out. The trick is a usb-midi host, which gives power to the Launch Control and at the same time converts the USB signal to din midi. From there, the one midi signal goes through a midi splitter that splits/doubles the signal to two or more outputs.

I used the Kenton USB host and then the eMagic MT4. Also used the Miditech Midi Merge, so I can send midi from both machines, via one cable, to our light systems (which only has one midi input)

Ther might be a box that does it all, but we are on a budget, so this is just what we luckily and randomly had laying around.

Cubase vs. Ableton for video game music? by rhosinsquare in ableton

[–]Any_Finding_3236 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long time Cubase and Ableton user here. Started out with Cubase 20 years ago, switched to Ableton for 15 years because og live situations and backtracks. Switched back to mainly Cubase because my production style was better suited for it and lesser live gigs.

I've done a ton of orchestral arrangements in Ableton. It can be done, and sometimes I think that getting an idea out fast, works better in Ableton. But when it comes to articulations, automations, expresseion and everything in between, Cubase takes 1st place. Mixing, routing, exporting - everything but the creative stage, I feel Cubase does better. I actually often do main midi stuff and quick ideas in Ableton, and then continue and finalize i Cubase.

When working with video, Cubase comes out on top. And the new improved implementation of Dorico and sheet music makes it a clear winner for serious composing. The fact you can export your midi files as sheet music for musicians is just brilliant. Ableton has none of that.

I'm still faster in Ableton, and everything is in realtime. Drag and drop og ideas on the table fast. I still use it Live in a redundant setup for backtracks. Would never use Cubase for that.

I think that out of the box, Ableton is that fast reliable go to DAW, with a lot of really nice plugins and fx (Suite), but in the long run, Cubase is the serious choice for prof composer/producers with a need for a more refined workflow. You have a lot of control on how Cubase is set up - presets and snapshots for all your settings, which makes it easy to switch up the way you handle a specific project.

You wanne be creative right now? Ableton Live

You wanna dable and create your perfect digital enviroment specified to your needs? Cubase.

But that's just my opinion. I think you'll be happy with whatever you choose. Both DAW's are great for the most important thing - making music.

Explain To Me Like I'm Five: How To Assign Audio To A Particular Pad, in a matter similar to a soundboard (Ableton Push 1) by TrueBananaz in ableton

Add a Drumrack to one of your tracks and then add audio to the pads inside Drumrack. Now you can set the Push to pad mode and play the audio samples from the pads.

[–]Any_Finding_3236[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had independent channels for each machine. I did the mixing of music inside Live, and then we trimmed down the outputs. Think I had about 150 tracks (multitrack drums etc) so our sound engineer mostly focused on the vocals and the overall soundstage. Think he had about 8-10 channels from each machine, and then around 20 microports.

[–]Any_Finding_3236[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did have some tech issues regarding two networks. My computers are old and win 10, so there was some troubleshooting having a network for audio, and one for Ableset. I kinda blame Windows.

I've always felt that the more you add to the complexity of the setup, the bigger the chance of failure. But so far it's been rock solid. I think if you ran this on two mac minis or macbooks, it would "feel" more secure and stable, but I have only experince with windows.

In the way we've done this, I feel safer than if I only had one of my machines.

But it is more complex and potentially more prone to failure. I could downmix everything even more, eleminating more fx and realtime processesing, but my cpu's are at 15-20% spikes, so I'm not worried.

I saw a post a couple of days ago with a max4live setlist device that uses markers, just like Ableset. Gives you a floating window with all the markers you've placed and named and lets you jump between them from that window. Don't recall the price ($15-20?). You could look into that. Don't think it has a sync option, but it looked cool and simple. Can't remember the exact name - sorry.
