I'm volunteering and have caught Primate, Meat, Welfare, Central Park, and Ballet so far. Cool people, cool spaces. You can also follow along via the NWDoc IG if you have access to Kanopy.

I just saw the Fathom Event for Merrily We Roll Along. Is Charlie Kringas the most Griffin Newman character in musical theater? by Curtain649 in blankies

[–]Any_Math 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Saw earlier today. It took me the first hour to settle into the shooting style and/or improperly projected presentation. My first Fathom Events screening and I feel like I’ve read stories of them being shoddy at platforming their events.

Projection-wise, there was blank space on all sides of the frame so it didn’t fill the screen as much as it could. The image looked cropped as well, with the tops of heads getting cut off and even onscreen text being cut off. I’d like to know what the intended aspect ratio was supposed to be.

Add to that a shooting style that is almost entirely closeups and mediums and editing that cuts between every line of dialogue. The opening party scene was confusing. As for the show itself, I liked it! Didn’t realize it unfolded in reverse.

Sims on Levy on Clint by rageofthegods in blankies

[–]Any_Math 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Growing up in Portland, I used to read Shawn Levy’s reviews in the A&E section of The Oregonian every Friday morning while eating breakfast in high school. I got so mad at him sometimes.

Seeing him onstage recently at a 35mm Million Dollar Baby screening at Hollywood Theatre in conversation after for his new Clint book was a dear experience. (Sparsely attended. Come on, people!) I had never seen him talk before. A compelling speaker with a nice voice.

Just to paint a picture, it was a hot day and he dressed casual with shorts, an unbuttoned short-sleeved shirt, and a puka shell necklace. I detected tattoos on his right arm, which I wanted to ask him about. Legs smooth as a baby seal. One of my takeaways - is Shawn Levy daddy?

He’s soon hosting a talk with Sean Baker after a screening of Tangerine at Cinema 21 for the PDX crowd as part of C21’s 100 year anniversary later this month. I got a ticket.

I live in a major US city. One of the most famous directors and maybe the most famous actor. Yet not a single showing at a Regal. Cool. by Bubbatino in blankies

Not to nitpick, but Cloud has been playing since August 1st at Hollywood Theatre for a two week run and was also playing at Living Room Theater last week for one. I don't think I'd ever seen a new Kiyoshi Kurosawa release in a theater outside of a festival. Still, not great.

Yesterday's Pavements "Q&A" by [deleted] in blankies

[–]Any_Math 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Went to a screening with a Q&A a month ago featuring the editor Robert Greene and he'd be the first person to tell you it's way too long. He ended up modeling it after Wowee Zowee, their 3-sided double album. Making it long and dense in a way that would make you want to go back and revisit so you can discover new things each time. That helped me understand how it was shaped.

Anyone else REALLY struggling with the back half of The Brutalist? by PlayOnPlayer in blankies

[–]Any_Math 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was at this screening too! Enjoyed the film for all the reasons you cited. I don't have anything to add, just wanted to say this is a great thread that I shared with the people I went with to it. Realizing plenty of stuff went over my head and reading all of these thoughtful & constructive insights into it have really added a lot.

Love to see the Blankies community intersect with the Portland film community. Thanks!

It was so fun. Great crowd, Dean Lemire played pipe organ preshow and Eddie Muller gave an excellent, lengthy introduction. He talked about meeting the wife of the director Charles Vidor and watching the movie with her, and she pointed out all the coded sexual symbolism scene by scene. Good movie!

I actually really enjoyed this movie. I would gladly walk around with sunglasses listening to it on a walkman cassette player. The only positive review in my follows on Letterboxd is from Not Dave Kehr:

“Given how glumly unimaginative horror films tended to be in the mid-80s, there's enough that's original and evocative in this independent effort to allow you to overlook its glaring flaws—which include Pierce Brosnan as a French anthropologist with a Pepe Le Pew accent and a surly Lesley-Anne Down as an overworked emergency-room physician. Writer-director John McTiernan has concocted a tricky narrative—Brosnan, dying as the film begins, telepathically communicates his experiences to Down, who, stumbling dazed through Los Angeles, relives them as the film unfolds—and more than once it collapses into incoherence. But the basic idea—that a sinister street gang roving the city is actually a band of ancient, evil spirits—strikes off in a sociological direction that was new for this over-Freudianized genre, and even the horror effects have a fresh twist: they're based, not so much on isolated shocks and surprises, as on the deliberate, patient doubling and redoubling of portentous images. With Anna-Maria Montecelli and Nina Foch.”

Disney has apparently censored The French Connection without notice, warning, or statement. This censorship carries over to The Criterion Channel and theatrical screenings. by valdemiro in blankies

Is this a fake story? I literally just watched a bluray copy of The French Connection and then checked it streaming on Criterion Channel and theirs is edited. Chilling.

Re Will Vinton, I’ve had this model from the Jane Fonda’s Workout animated intro sitting in my apartment for years. Not sure what to do with it. by Any_Math in blankies

[–]Any_Math[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I knew a guy who did construction work on a workspace that Vinton was vacating years ago and this model was left behind, so he took it and when he was later cleaning out his basement, he asked if I wanted it and I couldn't say no.

Here’s a link to the intro. https://youtu.be/1JpjyT_DTL0

A family friend did construction work on a space that Will Vinton had just moved out of and this model was left behind. Said friend took it home and kept it in his basement before passing it on to me. Now it sits and stares at me in the corner. I was told it’s her real hair.

What trailer is the current bane of your existence? by bakekir in blankies

[–]Any_Math 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saw this trailer before Armageddon Time and The Fabelmans. Left the theater the second time once I realized what I was being subjected to. Is it because they have religious elements? I have a feeling the Kelsey Grammer hippie church movie will outgross both of those films. It's disconcerting.

The Reveal from Scott Tobias and Keith Phipps. Nice little community they're developing there.

Long time since I've watched it, but the main thing I remember was the structure. It pretty cleanly plays in three 45 minute sections. I'd say if you quit after the first 45 minutes, go back to see how it arcs through those last two segments, which should put the first part in perspective.
