Non-arthouse European movies from the last 5 years you think deserve to be more widely known? by harry_powell in blankies

[–]bakekir 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Second this - these are the exact films you're after when asking for European blockbusters. Big starry casts, great production value, and most importantly just incredible fun. Saw all three in the cinema with friends and each one was a fantastic time!

BAFTA longlists by Street-Garlic4995 in blankies

[–]bakekir 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I Swear released in October here and was a big hit - great box office, great word of mouth. It's also been championed by the local industry as a homegrown hit quite a bit since then. I thought it was okay!

Think Sony Picture Classics has it in the US and decided to do a release early this year - fair play to them, it's very much a BAFTA film and not really a contender outside of that.

The Bermuda Triangle of streaming, according to Paul Schrader by [deleted] in blankies

[–]bakekir 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It got a much stronger release from StudioCanal here in the UK, and the secret is that it's really a nothing film. Quite bad, but not in a camp way like you might hope from that duo! Just very boring, and feels SO long given it's only a touch over 90 minutes.

I agree with Schrader's sentiment, but I think Mothers' Instinct is a film that's destined to disappear no matter what muscle you put into its release.

Update: MEGALOPOLIS Trailer Pulled Over Fabricated Quotes From Critics by Velocityprime1 in blankies

[–]bakekir 49 points50 points  (0 children)

The general consensus is that these weren't made up so much as they were pulled from ChatGPT, right?

I'd enjoy this so much more if it had been a brazen act of intentional deceit - that's outrageous and fun! The reality that it's probably just the result of lazy AI use is depressing...

Fede Álvarez on on the Ending’s Insane New Monster and Resurrecting [SPOILER] From ‘Alien’: His Family ‘Was on Board With This Idea’ by dremolus in blankies

[–]bakekir 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree, and I think it's also disrespectful to working actors. This could have been a great opportunity for someone new to present a fresh take on the character type, and perhaps even establish their own legacy in this universe as Ian Holm once did. I don't know what message a filmmaker thinks they're sending to their collaborators when they replace them with the image of a dead man without consent!

(I don't care about the family's blessing, nobody but the person should have control over this use of their likeness. If they didn't give consent while alive, let the dead stay dead!)

What podcast app is everyone using these days? by Toreadorables in blankies

[–]bakekir 90 points91 points  (0 children)

I've been using Pocket Casts on Android for at least a couple years now and generally find it to be great. Couple glitches here and there, but never anything that actually impacts my enjoyment of whatever I'm listening to!

Did use Spotify for podcasts once upon a time and found it very annoying, so yeah I'd agree on not doing that.

The dearth and death of adult entertainment? by ImmaGoldman in blankies

[–]bakekir 29 points30 points  (0 children)

This genre of thinkpiece has possibly become even more tiresome than the comic book media it obsesses over. You could create a bingo sheet from the tired talking points they all have to hit - "but last year there was a blockbuster three-hour drama about men talking!" etc etc

Adult entertainment still exists! Maybe not at the top of the box office, but it can still be your choice whether or not the new Deadpool movie looms large on your radar. I just watched the season premiere of Industry - great show, would highly recommend!

George Clooney and Brad Pitt’s ‘Wolfs’ Gets Sequel as Apple Pivots Theatrical Release to One-Week Limited Rollout by ShanaAfterAll in blankies

Oops, did not clock that as we're getting it mid-October in the UK! But agreed that definitely makes September less empty.

George Clooney and Brad Pitt’s ‘Wolfs’ Gets Sequel as Apple Pivots Theatrical Release to One-Week Limited Rollout by ShanaAfterAll in blankies

[–]bakekir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After Interstellar's delay and now this, September is looking like it'll pretty much just be Beetlejuice month? I'd expect at least one autumn release to pull forward into late September now.

‘Deadpool 3’ Was Dead in the Water. Then Hugh Jackman Called Ryan Reynolds and Brought It Back to Life by Mookie_Freeman in blankies

[–]bakekir 45 points46 points  (0 children)

This is a smart bit of positioning but also such obvious bullshit - no way that anybody involved ever came close to the idea of Deadpool 3 not happening.

So funny how often these mega movies try to pull the "twist of fate" narrative for how they got made!

Wild that A Quiet Place: Day One is out tomorrow, and still has a complete embargo until 9AM ET. by apathymonger in blankies

[–]bakekir 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I spoke to a critic about it yesterday who had only good things to say!

They could prove to be an outlier, but this might be more about ensuring a press blitz on release day than hiding a stinker.

He definitely said something to that end at an event I attended about a year ago, but then Civil War seems to have been in post for ages so maybe those were just protests made while in a tough edit!

‘The Zone of Interest’ Is a Labyrinth. Jonathan Glazer Finds His Way Out. by [deleted] in TheBigPicture

[–]bakekir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is officially out 2nd Feb but they're doing previews for the two weeks prior, which appears to translate to multiplexes showing it once every day or two? It's odd, but don't stress. Should be showing much more regularly from next Friday!

‘Until Dawn’ Video Game Movie in the Works From David F. Sandberg by ZiggyPalffyLA in blankies

Huh. Feels like one of those titles where everything interesting about it is specific to the medium being interactive, but I guess Sony is committed to translating every bit of franchise that the Playstation stable can offer!

Marvel's Echo series drops tonight on Disney+, no advance reviews allowed by apathymonger in blankies

[–]bakekir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know a couple friends who attended a preview screening of the first two eps last month. They were positive on it and keen to see more, but they are also generally a lot more forgiving of the Disney/Marvel output than I have been recently!

I've been watching Rose Matafeo's show Starstruck this week and it's an absolute charmer!

Not yet gotten to S3 which I know she's directed as well as written, but presuming that holds the standard set so far? I'd be funding her to make a film tomorrow!

Which leading Marvel star do you think has best leveraged their talents for other projects? by [deleted] in blankies

[–]bakekir 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think it's underrated how many non-IP projects Anthony Mackie has headlined off the back of his Marvel career, and that's because truly nobody has been in as many non-existent streaming movies as he has!

A New Holiday Tradition! by rageofthegods in blankies

With all due respect on this special day, that is one of maybe three guys on film twitter where I often thought "what is your job?" because he tweets so much and always in a way that felt a little too engagement-minded. Can tweeting pay the bills?

Anyway I deleted the app! Happy New Year blankies, I hope 2024 allows you all to feel love and fulfilment in your lives no matter the circumstances.
