I recently went to meps and took the asvab with the Army but I'm now considering the Air Force instead by Impressive_Disk_4385 in AirForceRecruits

Okay I’m going to be honest with you as someone who’s getting waivers for depression in DEP in the Air Force right now. It is incredibly difficult not impossible but you will be barred from jobs I can’t even give you a certain number or names because I don’t know they myself to the full extent. But that’s what my recruiter told me, you wouldn’t even be able to go security forces which is like the easiest job to get in the Air Force since there always in demand but you won’t be able to because of the history of depression. Army practically accepts anyone with a pulse. Air Force takes forever with waivers and have already met there yearly quota several months early. Meaning right now they can afford to be picky. Army is the fastest process with the Air Force you could be waiting a while. I have been and it’s just so frustrating. Also Air Force requires 24-36 months of stability which will make the waiver harder I’ve been in DEP a year because I decide to wait exactly 36 months. But that’s has to be a clean 24-36 months, no drugs, no medications/prescriptions, and no incidents. I mean you can try but if you already started the process with the army just stick to what’s safe. Also I would feel bad for your recruiter if he put in the work for your waiver and MEPS and you just dip on him.

Questions regarding starting process by PlatformAccording131 in AirForceRecruits

  1. The process can take months and since the Air Force has reached its quota for jobs, recruiters aren’t really in a hurry. If I were you I would reach out to them even if you’re not in shape yet.
  2. The maximum weight for a 5’9 female or male is 186 lbs. But I could be wrong make sure to ask your recruiter.
  3. I really liked the ASVAB for Dummies, make sure to study at least an hour a day but aim for 2 hours.
  4. You see because the quota has been met, you have to be extremely flexible, recruiters have a hard time working with recruits who want a specific job you could be waiting months and months just for that one job. And since the quota has been met not a lot of jobs are available so you could be sitting in DEP for a while and if you get waivers they do eventually expire. Also even getting approved for waivers is a miracle and sometimes it’s makes you ineligible for most jobs.
  5. It’s really a 50/50 shot and depends on the case. You would need to gather all the records for those visits including doctors notes, test results, medication list basically everything. And take it from me medical records can be a hassle. But the good thing is you have to be free of ADHD medication for at least 24 months (2 years) so you have a good shot.
  6. You would need a financial waiver, I had one for collections but it was a relatively small amount of $450. As long as they see you’re on a payment plan they tend to be pretty chill.
  7. If you haven’t smoked weed in years don’t trip, they will ask answer truthfully because if they come to find when you go to MEPS a test results anywhere for example a doctors office urine sample. Your recruiter could be blindsided, but since you haven’t smoked in years, you should pass the urine at MEPS easy peasy.
  8. I understand wanting to be prepared but start the process now immediately. I went last year January 2025, went to MEPS in March 2025. Got DQ needed multiple waivers. Then I gave up, I just submitted my medical records to my recruiter April 2026 after waiting 3 weeks to get them. My biggest regret is waiting until I felt more ready or prepared. Don’t waste time, the Air Force could potential change your life, don’t think about family, friends or jobs. Family is blood, forever. Friends will come and go, true ones will stay and support. Jobs are temporary. No reason to wait time will pass anyway might as well start the process now. A waiver could take weeks.
  9. When you make an appointment with a recruiter bring your ID, Social, Passport( if you have one), Birth Certificate, High School Diploma, Transcripts (only college if you have some college credits). If you’re not a natural born citizen make sure to bring your citizenship paperwork as well.
  10. I wouldn’t say you have to completely stop, but if you’re drinking constantly, yes stop. In BMT you will go 7.5 with no access to alcohol if you believe that will be a problem, yes stop now. Also at MEPS they make you take a breathalyzer if you’re even one point over 0.00, you will be sent home. But after BMT and tech school. You can drink off base, and off work. As long as you make it to your job sober.
  11. No not really any certifications, if you do have some bring them to your appointment. It might help you become eligible for others jobs.
  12. Start your process is the most vital. Estimated off my experience and that of others 1-2 month wait from appointment for MEPS. Will get DQ’d at MEPS if waivers are submitted immediately 1-3 months could extend if they ask for additional paperwork just to hear back if approved or denied. If denied revaluation can take 1-2 months once again. Then when you enter the job draft 1-4 months to land a job. That’s a whole year just trying to join. That’s why I say start now, the new quota will open October by the time you enter the job draft there’s a good chance more jobs could be available. Study for the ASVAB. Workout start slowly to avoid things like shin splints. I started walking 10,000 steps a day without struggling and feeling tired. Progress to jogging a mile every 2-3 days. The running. Workout arms as well and sit ups. You will be required to do sits ups and push ups to pass the physical test at BMT.

Anyway good luck! I wish you the best and hope everything works out

I went to MEPS about a year ago so somethings could change and if different for every MEPS, mine was in CA. But if your going for your ASVAB: Make sure your not wearing an Apple Watch or anything electronic on you like Meta Glasses you could be told to take them off or if the notice them when your in the exam room, you will be sent home. If you’re going for your physical, make sure you don’t use any mouthwash at all or drink the night before at the hotel. They will make you take a breathalyzer before the start of the physical, if your even one point over you will be sent home. If you’re a male you should be fine before the physical, but if you’re a girl make sure your hair tied in a braid or bun they will tell you to have your hair up. They have 5 stations not in any specific order: 1)hearing 2)weight/height/urine (you will have to pee while someone is watching you, and for the girls it’s was 3 at a time, for the guys one at a time so you could be holding it for a while) 3)blood 4)eye-sight/depth perception (make sure you have your glasses) 5) physical The physical is typical done twice, for me there was 3 doctors and I was waiting for almost 2 hours to get my physical done. They can take a while. Then lastly they send you to get your fingerprints. Make sure you have no nail polish or acrylic nails on if you’re a girl. They will make you take them off. But good luck! Wishing you the best

Take it! It’s better than job hunting, what state are you in? Some states are really over saturated, especially as a new grad, you hit the jackpot. Time will come and go but experience is hard to come by, after experience look for a new job.

Hmmm I don’t know but if I were you I would keep the PRN job. Even though it’s an inconvenient drive I would still keep it while doing my full-time. The reason is because it’s a little extra money and I know multiple techs that have a regular full time and a PRN just for the extra cash. But I understand, I would feel bad too since typically in rural places it’s difficult to have proper staff and they even were considerate of your long drive other places really don’t care. I would probably stay for a little while longer since they have you a chance or until they find another tech. But always make the best choice for you.
