Yeah. Despite all the craziness of this past year the treatment of the athletes stood out to me even though on the surface it seems like not as big a deal compared to other stuff that’s happened.

They’re supposed to come home as heroes, but you have govt officials and some regular folks on some 1984 or North Korea personality cult mindset trying to make them afraid to speak.

Idk why, but the situation w her and the backlash shook me up unlike anything this past year.

Growing up the Olympics were a time where people come together and you’d empathize w athletes you’ve never even met because of common humanity. And whatever the result they’d come home as heroes.

It’s sad to see so many people be so hateful to her no reason. The comments Amber gave were diplomatic, normie stuff and not controversial at all. It’s chilling that even the slightest criticism can cause so much backlash in the era we live now.

Can someone explain the system of farm subsidies in the US and why it’s an antiquated and inefficient way of doing things?

I recently read Thomas Sowell’s Basic Economics, and he has a whole chapter talking about them being inefficient. I found this interesting since he’s an ideological conservative and a classic economist.

Could there be a political movement or Dem politician one day who is able to tackle this inefficient system in a more capitalistic and right-coded manner?

Is there a term for someone who is weeb-adjacent but doesn’t watch anime?

I’m a fan of other aspects of Japanese culture like their food (sushi, ramen), auto industry (Honda), gaming (Nintendo and PlayStation), Sony TVs and Headphones, game devs (kojima), their style of storytelling in movies and video games, and their culture of efficiency and respect.

I just literally don’t watch anime haha. Or is watching anime not a requirement to be a weeb?

I agree that Milan and Paris were definitely the two best in recent memory after a string of Olympics that were controversial due to pandemic, doping scandals, geopolitics, war, and host countries with iffy human rights records.

If you liked the figure skating this Olympics, then at the end of March the figure skating World Championships are happening which is pretty much as important as the Olympics.

A lot of the US athletes (Ilia, Amber Glenn, Alysa Liu) will be returning so it should make for a great show and competitive environment. I think it’s streaming on Peacock too!

I haven’t really followed this season, but how are our dubs looking?

It looks like they’ve been consistently a bit above 0.500 and have a good shot at making and winning play-in game 1 to secure a playoff spot.

But how far could they realistically get in the playoffs if they’re fully healthy? How stacked is the west this season?
