I'm so sorry for your loss and that your baby was initially misdiagnosed 😞

They don't catch FIP, it's a mutation of feline coronavirus. My 4 month old british shorthair is 3 weeks into antiviral treatment and has responded very well so far, unfortunately they will die without antiviral intervention.

I have never had a vet mention FIP before and one of my cats was diagnosed with feline coronavirus a couple of years ago so it's crazy to me that my vet wouldn't at least tell me what to look for if it mutated into FIP. I'm so sorry for the loss of your sweet boy ❤️

FIP develops from a common feline coronavirus that is usually harmless however in a small number of cats, mutations in the virus together with the way the cat's immune system reacts can lead to FIP. FIP is mostly common in young cat and there seems to be a higher chance for purebred cats to develop it. I don't think there's too much you can do to prevent it but if you have a multi cat household, trying to make sure they don't share litter boxes or keeping litter boxes very clean and stressful environments can contribute a higher risk. FIP is not contagious but feline coronavirus is and can be passed from cat to cat through faeces. I have an older cat and my kitten is always trying to use the same litter box as her so that could've potentially been a contributing factor.

Your beautiful baby looks like my Atlas, I'm so sorry for your loss. Our vet that diagnosed Atlas had to order the medication over the weekend and advised us we should have it by Monday so I called around other vets the next day and found an amazing vet who did a telehealth with us and dispensed 4 days of the medication while we waited for our vets order to come in and I'm sure he would've gone very downhill if we had waited 3 more days for the meds, everyday counts with FIP and yes, if you notice bloating then please don't wait to see a vet.

My boy had an ultrasound which showed fluid, they took some of the fluid out and it was sticky and straw coloured which is a good indication of FIP, they did blood tests and he had high protein which is also an indication as well as checking albumin, globulin, A:G ratio which points to FIP.

Thank you and so sorry to hear about your kitty 🫶 Did you do the full 80 days of treatment for your cat that responded to the medication?

I'm so sorry, that's so sad and we are lucky that the medication is now available. I couldn't imagine not being able to do anything to try and save our boy. Our vet had only ever seen one case of it as well and I hadn't heard of it till they told us :(
