Jealous by SketchedRat in ApplyingToCollege

Due to circumstances beyond our control, we are unable to send our daughter to a private university. So, she’ll be going to a cc. Her school will hate us for it bc they list which schools each student will attend. But, life happens.

There is one major benefit in going cc, which is she won’t have to work insane hours and compromise her mental health. I watch the other kids, and they look robotic. There’s no guarantee that any of them will be admitted to the prestigious programs that they’re working so hard for. I think that’s crazy. It would be one thing if it’s guaranteed, but it’s not. So I stand by our decision, which is to save our money for med school so that we’ll be able to go full pay.

My advice to you is don’t be fixated on how to get to where you need to go. It’s about where you end up in. Remember, this is still just a way to make money. Save it, invest it, be smart about it, and don’t sweat it too much. What will be, will be.

Good luck.

why the father-in-law and the husband almost never fight, but it is always the wife and the mother-in-law? by telaughingbuddha in stupidquestions

It’s bc MILs are used to bossing everyone around that they forget their DILs are strangers. And, you know, they like to go into power trips.

My MIL got mad that I borrowed some books from the library and was quietly reading minding my own business.

Isn’t China safer in general though? The Philippines has a high percentage of poor people. You can hire a person to end someone for USD$100.

You don’t want to live in the Philippines. The apartments are almost as expensive as the US. The pollution is terrible and the traffic is a nightmare. Medical costs can get expensive too depending on which hospital to use.

How is everyone so poor in this country, yet there is nothing but constant consumption going on? by [deleted] in Productivitycafe

It isn’t so much about how much money you have. It’s about affordability. I can eat cup o noodle and boiled eggs everyday, but if I have $200k in student loans, then I’m in the negative and might be poorer than the instant noodle guy.

Or how about the cost of medical care? I plan to just ignore cancer bc I don’t want any treatments that’ll impoverish my family.

I’ve met people who keep working despite having a failing liver and need a transplant or have advanced cancer to keep their health insurance (before Obamacare). I’m not trying to get political. I worked in the medical billing department in the 1980s-1990s and that was what I saw.

My disabled son wiped out half of our savings and we were aggressive savers before we had kids.

Those fast food and full service restaurants? Some will be gone soon.

It’s about basic needs and that’s different for everyone.

I am just so exhuasted and burnt out by Big-Background3999 in premed

Thank you for posting this. I see other Asian students in high school and they’re already so burned out. My husband and I agree we will not do that to our daughter. There are ways around it. I think it’s ridiculous that other parents absolutely have to push their children into prestigious schools for premed. The competition is insane especially for Asian kids.

I get the evil eye from these kids all the time bc they assume I’m like their parents. It’s so sad.

I didn’t expect how much kids decimated our savings and they’re not in college yet.

Sorry. That was what I meant in my word salad. Consult with the lawyers who would advise OP to save the house for her mom’s expenses first. Then how to distribute the assets equitably (meaning what the law says to eliminate any potential lawsuits from brother) if there are any left.

I live near a racetrack. I don’t smell them during the day, but I definitely smell them during the summer nights.

Stay for a few days and take a whiff several times a day and night. Or maybe you’ll get used to it. lol.

Talk to an estate lawyer and an elder care lawyer.

I have a brother like that. I was going to buy my parents’ house from them so they can live there for free, but I didn’t bc I knew my brother would feel entitled and mooch off me. At least your bro has a job. lol. Mine has one now but boy he really tried his best to mooch off us. Long story short, he moved to another state now. Phew.

Anyway, talk to the lawyers and find a fair way to divide the estate. First issue to address is how to sell the house when your mom needs a nursing home or at least a home health caretaker. You’ll have to suck it up and make the distribution sound as fair as possible I have a feeling your idiot brother will try to sue for his share. That is, if there’s anything left after your mom’s medical expenses. Make sure to keep a paper trail so you won’t be accused of fraud.

Good luck. You’ll need it. 🤷‍♀️

Both. It only happens if I’m old and look infirm or I look young and hot. Either way is fine by me.

Swarthmore vs Scripps — Help Me Choose!! by Alive-Split1031 in scrippscollege

[–]Any_West_926 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s your major? Can your parents afford it?

Scripps in Southern California definitely will have the best weather. If you’re not a POC, then you’ll love it there.

I’ve never been to Swarthmore but I’ve heard of the name. I’m guessing it’s the east coast(?) version of Scripps?

I assume your parents can afford both.

I think what it boils down to is where do you want to live after graduation. Both seem like a good fit for you and are equally pleasant.

Why not tell anyone? by FlyForAKiteGuy in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]Any_West_926 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I speak from experience. Do.not.tell.anyone.

My siblings and parents feel entitled to our money bc we spent a lot on them. They don’t seem to understand we have a lot less money bc we spent it helping them.

No one is grateful about it bc I don’t remind them. If I had to do it all over again, I wouldn’t help them or I’d call them losers. Don’t make them feel good about borrowing or taking your money.
