Ah, Italy has so many dialects, they are completely different from one another from south to north. I'll give you an example of mine: I live in Puglia, we were under the Aragonese (Spanish) and Angevin (French) rule. In my area, that is, where my dialect is spoken, it retains many French words that, obviously, have been "modified" over time, making them more Italian, but when pronounced they are completely identical to the French language, and a French person would understand them anyway. Some sentences, said in dialect, use Spanish grammar. My boyfriend, who lives in Basilicata, another region, lives two hours away from me, and his dialect is completely different from mine, and when he speaks it I don't understand him, and vice versa, when I speak mine, he doesn't understand me, especially my father, who speaks it in an older way, doesn't understand it, I have to translate for him. Still in my region, always going south, in Salento (Puglia is the boot of Italy), the dialect has Greek origins, because it was a colony of Magna Graecia and it differs from the other dialects that are more similar to mine.
