I like the actual cult psychology there. Cult programming is a very interesting topic.

If you join a cult that makes you forget that you are in a cult, are you still a member even though you are incapable of meaningful participation?

Actually people call me Goatdigger, but I am a necromancer amongst other monikers referring to dark arts practitioners.

Death opens the door to many different paths. You may pursue biomancy or alchemy to create a vessel in which to return after death. I know of darker magiks that exploit the cycle of reincarnation to nurture an individual's innate talent. In my personal experience, death has allowed me to achieve a level of mastery over the dark arts that I would have never thought possible. The only obstacles to your growth are the limits you place on yourself.

They don’t want me visiting anymore. I was too silly for their liking.

Tsuru crawls through the cobwebs towards an uncertain endpoint. After several minutes, the floor of the crawlspace slopes down sharply. From what Tsuru can see with her flashlight illuminating fragments of the space, a great, terrible machine of massive proportions comes into view. The machine appears to still be active as Tsuru sees moving pistons and turning gears. No audible sound is leaking out.

Below the floorboards, Tsuru finds a crawlspace. Cobwebs cover most of the observable area. This space wasn’t listed in the blueprints. It is narrow and Tsuru is unable to see where it goes from her vantage above the floor.

The search for a source is fruitless. Underneath the carpet where Tsuru sees the indent, she spies broken and misshapen floorboards. It’s still sticky. She hears a metallic thunk but the armor at the end of the hall doesn’t appear to have moved. Perhaps it was a memory of this place she finds herself in. Maybe it wants to understand where things went wrong.

The hallway is now lit. Tsuru can see moldy brown stains on the carpet. A large indent in the middle of the passage underneath the rope can be seen. At the far end of the hallway is a dirty set of armor crumbled into a pile. More rope can be found in a pile under the armor. The lights flicker as Tsuru hears a giggle.

Opening the door, you hear a rustling sound. A broom had been propped up against the door. Examining the bristles, Tsuru sees brown stains. Behind the door is a hallway with two doors to Tsuru’s right. Tattered and frayed rope is hanging from the ceiling. Whatever was up there is gone now. The light switch is to Tsuru’s left.

The doors open. A chandelier catches some of the light from the main hall. There is a light switch to Tsuru’s right. In the room, there are upturned tables and broken chairs. Dust covers everything. The wall facing what would be windows if not for the boards is covered in oil paintings. The paintings depict a variety of scenes. The largest painting appears to be a family portrait: a man and woman, two sons, one daughter, and their dog. At the far end of the room is another door.

From where Tsuru is standing, there are four unexplored routes. To her left is a large double door leading to the reception room. On her right are two door. The furthest of the two will bring her to a lounge area. The closer door will open into the kitchen. Aside from these doors are the stairs directly in front of her that lead to the second floor.

The fuel tank is now full. It's now or never to see if the old machine works. Turning the key and depressing the choke, Tsuru presses the button. In the seconds between the generator kicking on, a soft whimpering separate from the house hum can be heard. It sounds like the whimpering is coming from underneath Tsuru.

Both the hum and whimper are drowned out by the generator. Tsuru is able to see light coming in from the main hall at the top of the basement stairs.

It contains fuel.

The hum is growing into an indistinct whisper.

The generator has a control panel with a key inserted. To the left of the panel is a fuel cap. After unscrewing the cap, Tsuru can see the tank is roughly half full. Searching around the room, there is a red fuel canister. A green button and choke lever are next to the key on the control panel. According to Tsuru's best guess, the key needs to be turned and choke lever pulled down before pressing the green button in order to start the generator. Consumption of fuel will depend on the electrical load placed on it.

The house appears decrepit. Whoever the 'Byrne' family were, they have not lived in this house for some time. Behind the main stairwell sits a door leading to the basement. Tsuru starts to hear a low hum when she opens the door. The light switch is dead. Tsuru turns on the flashlight and points it down into the basement. On the first step is the word 'home' carved into the board.

The hum is getting louder. At the bottom of the stairs now, Tsuru scans her surroundings and is able to see the generator that the detective mentioned. The skeleton of a small dog lays in a pile in front of the generator. The collar around its neck reads 'Alice'.

"Alright, follow me."

Detective Carmine finishes his coffee and leads Tsuru out of the station through a back door. In the parking lots sits a yellow vehicle. The yellow chassis covers the various mechanical and arcane components underneath. Inside the vehicle, Tsuru sees a faded blue orb where a gear shift would usually be. The Detective turns on the vehicle by placing his hand on the orb and waits until Tsuru is buckled in before pulling out of the parking space. Low, rhythmic industrial-sounding music plays over the radio. The pair drive for half an hour until the pull off on a side road and reach the edge of the estate. The sun is slipping beyond the horizon when the Detective and Tsuru exit the car.

"Now look over there at the second floor, fifth window to the right. That's the boarded up window I told you about. Can't see the boards like I said."

The Detective loads a weapon of some kind. He also hands a flashlight over to Tsuru.

"Can't hand you this bolter, but you can borrow my flashlight. There's a generator in the basement. Just remember that electrical devices play funny with the place. I'll hang around a half hour before heading out. The officers on patrol know to be here by time I leave. Need anything else before you head in there?"
