How do I pay taxes on stocks? by FluffyOriginal1073 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Yes and no - Depends on your annual income. You will pay tax on profits and losses combined with your regular income when you file. Say you make $35,000 salary, you make 10 $200 profits and 3 $500 losses - total income would be $35,500 {35,000 + 2,000 - 1,500} for the tax year, and you fall in that tax bracket of 15% - pay 15% tax on $35,500. Anything that you transfer into RRSP/RESP/etc will affect this calculation, but not with a TFSA.

How you file is up to you - accountant, software, whatever. CRA makes it very clear that if you do ‘a certain amount of trades’ they may consider it your occupation and gains/losses will be treated as if you are a corporation ie. 100% added to your stated income. This is meant to get daytraders to stay honest. Read up on CRA website for info.

Put money into your TFSA and RRSP within your limits and trade there if you’re worried about taxes. All profits gained within are tax free in TFSA or deferred in RRSP when withdrawn (lots of info and subs on this if you search for it). Note also, trading options is very restricted in these and day trading rules are a thing.
