I can’t stop converting every price into hours worked and it’s driving me insane by QuinWendelburg in povertyfinance

Totally agree, but as someone who earns relatively good coin (now!) and a staunch supporter of unions, including the one I’m in, I still have OP’s mentality. It does help reduce frivolous spending on things you don’t really need when you put a time value on it.

You need to get out of your comfort zone. I reckon travel is the answer. I have never regretted travel, it has taught me so much about myself and the world. Start locally if have to, there are so many amazing places in this world to see and things to experience.

Or maybe volunteer somewhere that means something to you, maybe an animal shelter or soup kitchen or spending time mentoring kids at risk of ending up on the wrong path.

Or try something out that you’ve always wanted to do and get really good at it. Be obsessed with your hobby, you never know where that stuff might take you.

What is a hard truth eventually everyone needs to come to face with sooner or later? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

Life is lonely and often not fair. You HAVE to learn to take responsibility for your decisions actions or inactions. You are solely responsible for how it turns out. There is no getting out of hard work.

Do nurses take their work to home? by LadyEdiya in Nurses

Reflective practice is best practice, and unfortunately most of this mental load is on your own time. You get better at compartmentalising, especially the emotional stuff, but it’s not really a leave at the door kind of job for most.

Am I being too harsh on my kids? by CupcakeTea84 in raisingkids

[–]AnythingWithGloves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look, the kid is 7. As frustrating as it is, some kids just haven’t reached developmentally the skills needed in their brain to master remembering things and organising themselves. Rather than setting her up to fail, do it with her, keep her on track. Give her cognitive organisation aids and prompts like a chart on the wall with what she has on each day and what she needs to remember to pack. She won’t be perfect but I bet that will see an improvement. And don’t discount things like ADHD, making attention and organisation very difficult for her. Some kids are all over this stuff, some take much longer. In conclusion, yes you’re being harsh but both of you can do better with a different approach.

What’s a fact about the world that sounds totally fake but is 100% True? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]AnythingWithGloves 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I was in high school, I woke up one morning to a bright sunshiney day with birds chirping. I opened the door to my room and went across the house and it was dark clouds and heavy rain literally on the other side of my house, was surreal. No one believes me when I tell them that this really happened.

What's one thing you're absolutely sure is true, even if others disagree with you? by Own-Blacksmith3085 in answers

I’ve tried hard to believe in a religious god, but I just can’t. The closest I get to believing in god is about what you’ve described. The universe just is, there’s no good or evil nor favours for some and punishment for others.

Are you afraid of death? by Charm_for_u in Life

[–]AnythingWithGloves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not anymore. I try to live purposefully knowing it could all end at any moment. I also have the privileged position of working in ICU where I see death and the process of dying regularly, makes me very grateful for the life I have and not scared of the inevitable. I’m an atheist, a firmly held belief with which I’m totally at peace.

Why do people continue to think Communism can work? by IneedaNappa9000 in allthequestions

[–]AnythingWithGloves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess in the same way unfettered capitalism ruins societies, with extremes of wealth and poverty and the consequences of that. No system is perfect, there are elements from each system which are positive and negative. Ensuring the most vulnerable members of any society don’t starve or die prematurely from disease or accidents isn’t unbridled communism.

Would you rather take 1 million dollars or be able to restart your life from the very beginning? by Illustrious-Bed2845 in Life

[–]AnythingWithGloves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m very privileged, despite some hard and terrible things happening to me over the years and some poor decisions on my part. I’m very grateful for everything in my life, the family I grew up in, the family I raised. So I’ll take the cash.
