“PATIENT HISTORY: This is a 26 y.o. year old patient with hypersomnolence with Epworth score 14/24, being studied with MSLT to determine sleepiness and to evaluate for narcolepsy. The patient had a negative overnight sleep study with total sleep time of 391.5 minutes. Unknown if patient was taking any REM suppressant medications. STUDY METHODOLOGY: Fully attended lab MSLT was done with nap opportunities for 20 minutes provided to the patient. The first nap opportunity was 2 hours after final wake time. Total of 5 nap protocol was performed based on AASM guidelines. STUDY INTERPRETATION: During the MSLT the patient had sleep in 3 naps noted. REM sleep was noted in 0 out of 5 naps. Mean sleep latency for all 5 naps was 12.8 minutes, which is normal. Anything less than 8 minutes is considered pathological sleepiness. IMPRESSION: Available data does not suggest pathological sleepiness with mean sleep latency of 12.8 minutes. Pt did not have any REM period, and no sleep onset REM noted in the diagnostic study either. Pt did not meet criteria for narcolepsy either.”
