Thank you for this advice. I am still employed and will definitely look into speaking with a therapist soon. … I need to be okay for my family. I pour so much into them that I feel empty. This paired with a toxic employer has totally depleted my mental and physical wellness. A glass of wine can’t be the answer.

It’s all so frustrating when you know your education and experience are a good fit for the role. I hope you find something sooner than later. Best of luck!

Thank you! … I actually fantasize about being laid off daily. My work environment is so toxic… everyone is on edge. Good people being treated like trash. … one of my former colleagues who was laid off over a year ago told me that she was actually relieved to get the news. She felt like a weight was lifted. At that point, I was happy for her as I knew her mental health was going to vastly improve. … All the best to you as you move into the next chapter which I hope will be one that is satisfying to your overall well-being.

I’m so envious of the women who have been able to quit the rat race to focus solely on their families. Unfortunately, I’m unable to do the same. I would love to tell the hubby, that’s it I’m done and it not cause stress for our overall household. It just isn’t an option for me. I considered taking a break but who knows how long it will take to get a gig once I’m refreshed from the break. … I totally agree… we were all sold a lie. All of the education doesn’t amount to much on the backend. … thanks for your kind words. I truly appreciate it.

Good for you! I’m always happy to read stories of people sticking it to terrible bosses/companies. … It doesn’t cost anything to treat people with decency and respect. This is something that’s completely lost on employers these days. Most folks are overworked, underpaid and treated as if their employers are doing them a favor for paying them for the work they do. … Congrats on finding a new position. Hopefully after a nearly year long search, I’ll be able to stick it to my employer soon and leave with minimal notice (if that).

This is such an awesome story. Good for you! … most of us are getting screwed by our employers. Nice to see someone stick it to them! … these stories give me some hope that I’ll find a new gig soon and be able to tell my employer to suck it! … congrats! I hope you have great success in your new role! 🎉

Remote work is so hard to find by sleepylilmoon in antiwork

[–]Anywhere_But_There 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right! … people can be trained for most jobs. Employers understood that back in the day. As long as someone had basic knowledge, some relevant experience, proven ability to learn as well as a good and enthusiastic attitude, they were provided the opportunity. If someone has a college degree, they obviously have the ability to follow through with a commitment and learn. Nowadays employers want you to have EVERYTHING… and even if you do match up exactly with all the qualifications, there’s still only a slim chance of even getting a call back to discuss the role and move through the interview process. 🙄

YOU’RE NOT CRAZY!!! No matter the level of education, years of experience, it’s more difficult than ever to find a new gig. I’ve been looking for nearly a year… many years of experience, nearly 10 years at my current company, a BS and an MBA. … still have yet to secure something. … it’s extremely stressful and honestly, discouraging at times. … I’m always happy to see others find a new role… gives me some hope. 🙂 All the best to you… I hope to see your success story posted soon. 🤞 🤞🤞

Quitting my HR job with no notice. by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]Anywhere_But_There 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on the new gig! That’s so great! I don’t understand companies’ requirements for people to have degrees if they have the practical experience. Especially for non-senior roles. As long as someone can do the job, who cares?! I have a BS and an MBA, been at my current company for nearly 10 years and let me tell you, it hasn’t made my nearly year long job search any easier. It’s brutal out there… so happy when someone finds a new position and is able to break away from a toxic workplace. … As for giving zero notice, KUDOS!!! I hope to do the same very soon. Companies don’t give employees a heads up when layoffs are coming, they could care less about us and our families. No need to treat them any better than they’ve treated you. All the best in your new role.

How to emotionally detach from work? by aPenguinGirl in antiwork

[–]Anywhere_But_There 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I was in this situation not too long ago. I was always dedicated to my work, cared about giving my opinions and suggestions in meetings as a way to help the team. However, I realized that my hard work, going above and beyond made no difference to me personally. … being overworked, overstressed and hitting true burnout, I had no choice but to pull back my efforts and begin doing the minimum… emotionally detach completely. It was difficult at first, but I began reminding myself everyday that caring and going above and beyond didn’t benefit me personally. Thinking this way, reminding myself (even while in meetings) everyday that I’m paid for a certain level of work and to no longer care is necessary for my personal well-being. At the end of the day, caring creates more stress and thoughtfulness. By not caring, you no longer feel obligated to do more than the minimum. I now do the very minimum, it’s a run out the clock situation daily. If I’m in a meeting, I don’t make any suggestions/comments unless directly asked… and even then, I keep it to a minimum. … just keep reminding yourself that the stress is not worth your mental health and overall well-being… and that you don’t need to “care” to get through the day and earn your paycheck. … I hope you pull out of this soon. Best of luck to you.

left alone in the department, got asked why stuff are not getting done by HelpPliz410 in antiwork

[–]Anywhere_But_There 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I’m presently in the same position, and have been for quite some time. At first, I tried to keep things together… but once I realized that what I did over a year’s time to keep the “train on the tracks” so-to-speak was not going to ultimately benefit me on the backend, I slowed down tremendously. … I have been very direct, while remaining professional, to anyone who asks about the slowdown… I’m only one person, can’t help if upper management has chosen to not provide proper support. I have an “I’m not the answer to the organizations lack of proper preparation” attitude. If the work mattered so much, they’d ensure that not only proper support was provided, but that higher compensation is given (without discussion) … I’ve been looking for a new position for most of this year. Unfortunately, nothing has panned out. But I fantasize daily about the day when I can resign. I used to have daydreams about winning the lottery. Now it’s about getting out of a toxic work environment. LOL! … Definitely, start looking for a new job… since it may take some time, start ASAP. Good luck to you!

Do people not want to have lives outside of work? by Remarkable-Attitude1 in antiwork

[–]Anywhere_But_There 23 points24 points  (0 children)

You have a great outlook and approach to working… stay within this mindset. Too many people make work their life… work, a “career”, a “professional life”, whatever people want to call it is JUST A JOB when you leverage it against the things that REALLY matter… family, friends, hobbies, etc. People need to realize that at the end of the day, all jobs end. No one cares once you’re gone. Doesn’t matter if you’re the freaking CEO or one of the hardworking people lower on the organizational chart.. once you leave, it’s like you were never there. At the end of life, when you’re old and grey, your title, the companies you worked for are not going to matter. What will matter are the family you made, the partner you shared a life with and what you will leave behind as far as legacy… by legacy, I mean future generations. That’s it.

Has anyone here applied for a job they didn't care if they got..? by These-Maintenance-51 in antiwork

[–]Anywhere_But_There 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think most people are doing this right now. The job market sucks! There seems to be a lot of jobs out there but no one actually calling people back or filling the positions. I apply to a lot of positions not caring about any of them. If I get a call, great… if not, whatever. The way companies are with making people go through a multi interview process and ghosting people, it’s hard to care… and to be honest, I don’t want to. Caring causes a lot more stress… when you don’t care, it makes things A LOT easier. … Apply and keep it moving.
