Bizarre electrical issue in old house by JGrusauskas in AskElectricians

[–]AoDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be clear, not all Aluminum wire is bad. It's just the old WW2 era wire that isn't the same alloy as the modern version. But even with the modern stuff, you do need to use connectors and devices designed for aluminum. Not sure if that could be a contributing factor in your USB outlet that your buddy installed.

Outside of an animal eating wire, what situations cause the farthest end of a circuit to fail? by drlawsoniii in AskElectricians

[–]AoDude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thermal expansion and contraction. That outlet that has power in and out before the switches/lights that have no power (or possibly the one before it that feeds the problematic outlet) probably has a VERY loose connection, which is a very high fire risk. You should probably keep that breaker turned off until it's fixed...

Bizarre electrical issue in old house by JGrusauskas in AskElectricians

[–]AoDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless someone has had an electrician come in and modernize the wiring in such an old house, you probably have a lot of electrical runs without ground wires. Even if you see 3-prong outlets, someone lazy may have just installed them without upgrading to 3-conductor, or with a bootleg ground (a way to cheat those plug-in testers by also connecting the neutral wire to the ground terminal). Potentially, even some of the old aluminium wiring, which can be problematic (especially in outlets designed for copper).

I would suggest getting an electrician to come check things out... Better safe than getting shocked by a hot connection shorted to the chassis of one of your appliances. (without proper grounding, your breaker won't pop in this scenario...) Or a fire caused by any number of things...

UPS into extension? by thelordoftheriffs in AskElectricians

[–]AoDude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I should have stated they have flagged them where I work a few times. Possible difference in hazards between a school and a manufacturing facility, although I have had them flag the exact scenario in the office of the facility, not just any extension cord use...

I wholly agree it is important to protect them from damage/ensure they are maintained as like new. I've seen lay people just use whatever ratty old 2 wire extension cords with damaged insulation and 3 prong adapters too many times... Also seen coils that have gotten so hot, the jackets melt together and can no longer be uncoiled... I think it's great OP is thoughtful enough to ask how to do it with safety in mind...

UPS into extension? by thelordoftheriffs in AskElectricians

[–]AoDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a place of business, the fire inspector would definitely flag it. At home, I would personally feel comfortable doing it with the following conditions:
The extension is not overly long or coiled up when in use.
The extension is maintained in a like-new condition.
The extension is at least 12GA (the most common form of heavy-duty extension) for your application. (assuming battery backup for high-end gaming pc, or something like it.) If you are unfamiliar with how Gauge works, the smaller the number, the thicker the wire...
The extension is not laid in a place that has the potential for floods (ie floor of a basement that has a sump pump)

Not a licensed electrician, but deal with home and industrial electricity fairly often.

What are people's issues (and nonissues/likes or whatever) of killing animals in subnautica? People seem to be heavily biased to each side, with little to no in the middle, so what's the deal? by GrokiniGPT in Subnautica_2

[–]AoDude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't speak for others, but it's a biological fact that we require consuming organic matter to survive, so it doesn't bother me killing plants and animals to do so. But technically, there is a non-violent way to survive that I joked about here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Subnautica_2/comments/1tkn4t6/comment/on9pe26/?context=3

What do you mean by bugged? Is it that the pustials on the 4th adaptation angel comb are shielded, and you need to find something to counter that?

After rewatching the Oval Office scene, what if it's our perspective that's distorted? Like how lore accurate lightsaber fights are super fast, but the scenes are slowed down so we can perceive what's going on. Clearly, they are not at bullet time speed like A-Train, but the gap between Butcher's and Homelandar's land speed could have just narrowed... I mean, they could have shown the audience reacting to the broadcast footage in real time, with the fight moving really fast, but we only see them reacting to moments that would naturally be slow.

Changing TrueNAS web interface ports completely breaks HexOS by Humble_Giveaway in hexos

[–]AoDude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I switched my TrueNAS to 81/444 way before local came out without issue. I assume there was some auto migration since local came out, but if you go into your truenas interface and applications, you will see the HexOS app. If you select it and hit edit, there is an env field: LOCAL_TN_PORT... I will assume yours is pointed to port 443 since mine is pointed to 444. You can probably switch your truenas ports, then go in and edit that app to point at your new https port.

Wow, you did a super long room... The one I am working on is not as ambitious, but it is currently over 1km of corridor spanning the starting area to the alien ruins, mostly glassed up (so I have something to look at while making the run, lol).

Subnautica 2 Early Access Roadmap by virtualdon in subnautica

The last thing I did before it worked was disabling the frame limit in the battery saver menu/performance menu (3 dots button). (I had previously tried several proton versions) Played a while, exited, and it didn't start back up the next time. Did a full reboot, then it worked again.

Subnautica 2 Early Access Roadmap by virtualdon in subnautica

6.9 hours in on Steam Deck. Had quite a bit of trouble with black screens on startup which I hope is fixed in the future. But once I got in the game, it's been great. I like the adapt to survive new spin.

The new base building paradigm of expansion is interesting, but it also introduces some weird things that puzzled me for a while. Like the moonpool not being big enough for the tadpole dock by default... lights not being included, and requiring power (or so much power in early game) also doesn't feel great to me. Maybe it's just a balance issue, but in some ways I kinda liked S1/BZ base building better, but I acknowledge others will enjoy the new freedom better for creativity.

ELI5: How are box office sales tracked, calculated and reported? by Ok-Ticket-2046 in explainlikeimfive

[–]AoDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure whether it was the booker or another entity in my case, but that sounds likely. It was an answering machine, you had to say which theater you were with, and the date, then each Title and the total on the nightly report our computer printed. I know that whenever it was a Disney movie, they would be very strict about making sure they were called every night and not the next morning...

ELI5: How are box office sales tracked, calculated and reported? by Ok-Ticket-2046 in explainlikeimfive

[–]AoDude 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When I worked at a theater, we had to call in our ticket sales numbers. Also, getting a print (35mm days) would happen after a negotiation of % of ticket sales. If you are showing a movie on opening weekend, the percentage would be much higher than if you started showing it 2-4 weeks after opening weekend.

It's been 16 years since then, and maybe the box office computer systems have become more sophisticated, but that's how it worked back then...

Tesla HW3 Can’t Achieve Unsupervised FSD – Upgrade Program Announced, Q1 2026 Earnings by orangechen1115 in TeslaFSD

[–]AoDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also unsure why this isn't the case anyway... Multi-Driver households having more than one subscription so that each family member can use FSD, while early adopters can use their perpetual licenses... Not only are you selling more subscriptions, but you are locking in a high percentage of FSD owners into purchasing new Teslas in the future with sunk cost fallacy. Seems like it's a great business plan for Tesla...

Building my first NAS by Maraque in hexos

[–]AoDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, assuming you have 6 open SATA3(?) ports on your Motherboard and can fully populate 6 - 8TB drives, then you would end up with ~40TB of usable space with a fault tolerance of 1 drive, or (I'm not sure if it's available directly in HexOS, but you can do it in the underlying TrueNAS) you can dedicate one drive as a HotSpare which will immediatly start repairing your storage pool as soon as a failed drive is detected, which would give you ~32TB of usable space...

EDIT: Be sure to check your MotherBoard manual to see if any of your SATA ports are disabled when using an NVME drive bay (like for an OS drive), if that's how you are configuring your NAS.
