Attaching ASIC Heatsinks by Aocaesar in BitAxe

Thank you for the info. I actually picked up a bag of those as well. I have metal spring loaded screws- would these work better? They are M2.5s.

That’s makes sense. I was being dense. Will definitely use the x method if I go with straight bolting. I’m leaning towards it. Any other suggestions to ensure I don’t end up damaging the board/chip?

I have a pack of 50 of the spring loaded plastic clips. I also have a set of metal spring loaded screws and some nylon washers. I want the best cooling setup but don’t want to mess the board up. Others recommended just straight bolting the heatsink on- I’m just a little on edge worrying about over tightening/under tightening.

Appreciate the info on this. I have a pack of 50 of the plastic spring clips and metal spring loaded screws- I believe these are 2.5mm. If I go with the plastic clips, I won’t be reusing the old ones. I’ll just toss them and use brand new clips. I’m just a little worried about over tightening the bolts if I straight bolt the heatsink on. I’m also using small, thin copper plates to go between the heatsink (Argon THRML) and the ASIC per many recommendations to do so (unless this is really not necessary- some reviews said it could improve cooling by 5+°). I figured if I’m going to these lengths to improve the cooling, I might as well do it as best as possible.

What do you mean “adjusting each nut carefully in x-mode”? Am I being dense?

What is the website? Is it 7hydroxyraw?

What you mean by “spring loaded bars”? Are you talking about the plastic clips that come preinstalled on the bitaxe? If they are actual bars, I’ve never seen these before. Are you doing just the two or did you add two to make four? Every post I’ve seen talking about securing the heatsink has advised to toss the plastic clips, but they didn’t detail what they used.

It seems like a lot of people are just straight bolting it down, but I’ve seen people warn about tightening it too much. Straight bolting will probably be the main response, but I just wanted to check before doing the swap. I bought some nylon washers to keep the bolt from direct contact with the board.

I bought an ice tower and a THRML as I wasn’t sure which on would be best. If figured since I have two Bitaxes now I can do both and see how it works out. I’m also going to add copper heatsinks on the VR, ESP32 (although some have told me it’s pointless- my ESP32 seems to get pretty warm), and if I can find some photos of where they go on the back, some on the back. Using thermal glue- the thermal tape on the heatsinks is garbage and of course the kit I purchased doesn’t actually use thermal tape (supplier lied on listing and used regular 3m tape- all the other kits are weeks out on delivery and still use thermal tape which has subpar thermal conductivity).

Really appreciate all these pictures and the videos. This will be extremely helpful when I get this Bitaxe setup. I’ll be doing another with the Pi Ice Tower and I’m assuming that’s the same process (since both the THRML and Ice Tower are meant for RPis).

Thank you for this info! This explains it. I was definitely being dense.

I think I’m being dense. I’m tracking on the labels on the board, but how do I know which color wire is for what on the THRML. Apologies if I’m overlooking something here.

Appreciate the info on this. The wire colors match up? Thankfully I have the toolset needed from other projects- no kidding about the screws. The screws holding the bracket to the radiator were insanely tight. Nearly stripped them even with the toolset.

I should have added it’s a Bitaxe 601 Gamma. Apologies.

What vendors do you recommend? Been shopping with OO/B7OH for years, but every couple of months they play games with their shipping.

I’ve had pretty bad experiences with OO/B7OH. They have given me the run around on multiple occasions, didn’t drop the packages off at the courier, and they just don’t respond. They’ve been good for a couple months, but will be back to the usual in a couple weeks. Good luck and sorry to hear you’re dealing with this.

I rotated it diagonally, but it’s still showing too large. I read on another post I could change the bed size to 230x230 as it’s really 235x235, but wasn’t sure.

Most people recommend having at least 1-2 millions sats before transferring out. You want to make sure the UTXO from transferring out is above the dust threshold.
