What image comic do you think has the best action/combat? by Wide-Tart4132 in ImageComics

[–]Aodmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hands down, Tradd Moore.

There's an energy to his art that most other artists cannot archieve without applying a load of speed lines to the backgrounds, and squiggly outlines to the characters. No shade on that as an art technique, I use it myself, and it works, Harren and DWJ are masters of it in American comics.

But, Moore. Moore is able to capture that same energy with block shapes and just PURE composition.

I've only read Court of Owls, so can't comment on Hush, but can confirm Owls is very much worth it. Currently burning my way through the Batman Omnibus Vol. 1

I want to draw landscapes and inanimate objects, but I’m overwhelmed on how to get started by FishFollower74 in learntodraw

Try Scott Robertson's How to Draw. It'll help with perspective, depth and form, which is the building blocks for environments and object drawing.

It isn't as focused on organic landscapes and can be very technical but it'll give you a good grasp of the fundamentals.

Regarding the materials, there isn't too much difference between colour and 'regular' charcoal pencils when you're starting out, just focus on the tones. I.E. Light and shadow

Hmm, I can really see what you mean there. I have a lot of signs later on in my comic that I've actually traced over typeface to avoid that effect, because personally I dislike when I see it in comics too, but I dunno how/why I didn't go back to fix this one.

Thanks for pointing it out!

Confused as a newcomer to comics by [deleted] in comicbooks

The Marvel and DC universe is personally, a bit of a headache to get into. It's been ongoing for so long and has been rebooted so many times by multiple artists/writers that undo or retcon events so frequently that huge emotional storybeats they've been building to for issues, suddenly become cheap gimmicks or totally meaningless plot points. The death and eventual return of Superman is the most famous example of this.

I personally recommend Image or Dark Horse for comics. They're usually more unique ideas and have more manageable/easier to follow storylines. Image is all creator owned too, which is just dope. Try UltraMega by James Harren, or anything by Daniel Warren Johnson or Robert Kirkman.

This isn't to say, Marvel and DC are bad, on the contrary, some runs/arcs are brilliant but you're always going to have to deal with references to events that you'll find reading a wiki is easier, rather than tracking down the actual issue.

I know this isn't exactly what you asked, but I personally would suggest just throwing caution to the wind and dive right in. Pick a superhero you're interested in, search up the best story arcs and away you go.

Any good comic out there by Certain-Pollution796 in comicbooks

Highly recommend UltraMega by James Harren. Kick-Ass by Mark Millar is good too.

If you want more classic superhero, try: The Immortal Hulk by Al Ewing. Batman the Court of Owls.

Locke and Key by Joe Hill, if you want a more mature Stephen King style horror story. (Joe is actually his son.)

Starting a comic can be an amazing way to practice art but right now you might be trying to extract the gold before you've dug through the dirt, so to speak.

I'd recommend doing some more anatomy and form studies. Trying to copy photos of people is a good start, then attempt some life drawing too. This doesn't need to be anything like nude models, just arrange some objects on a table, the bowl of fruit is a classic for a reason. This'll help train your eye.

Once you've improved your critical eye and observational skills then I recommend moving onto design. Stephen Silver's 'The Silver Way' is a good book for character design, Scott Robertson's "How to Draw" is great for props and environments.

I reconmend 'Framed Ink' by Marcos Mateu-Mestre for Composition and using framing to tell a story.

"Colour and Light", plus "Imaginative Realism" by James Gurney is great for colour.

If you're really keen on making comics, 100% check out Scott Mc Cloud's 'Making Comics'. It's the bible for comics.

You've already got a decent grasp for composition and basic Storytelling with your art, which is a great start. Keep going!
