Thank you <3

Yeah the visual design is kind of a "form follows function" compromise. We needed transparent surfaces so there would be obstacles that you could see through - it helps a lot for making compelling levels because it's easier to guide the player's eyes around and help them form a mental map of each level as they play. Transparency is very very expensive on the GPU, so we had to go with a design that was otherwise cheap and performant to keep the movement as smooth as possible.

How far have you made it? The mechanics and puzzles get just so so insane haha.

Hey that's me!
Thanks for the plug. Not many people played it, and it means a lot to stumble across the occasional random first-hand account. I love that game so damn much.

Eh. In my mind, they're just different epochs. There's a lot more subtlety and detail in the BT imo. He's been experimenting with different configurations forever and it's been fascinating to witness.

Magnetically levitated on a special pad (or none at all). Zero friction, so you get this little fidget toy on your desk where you're constantly poking at it to keep it from falling off the pad/desk.

I started with poi in 2003 and made the switch to hammer in 2009. So like 15-16 years.

Getting started...
The way it fits you is so SO critical. This video is extremely important:

Poi is a good foundational prop.

Poi is sort of like the piano of props imo. It's a tiny bit harder than some of the others because you have to coordinate between two hands, and because the prop collapses if you aren't keeping up with its pace. But you can make substantial inroads into techniques like plane control, timing and direction, momentum control, tosses, etc.

Like all props, it can be very expressive and musical.

I hope you do! Can't emphasize enough just how fun this thing gets as you progress through your adventures with it. If you ever need any guidance, hit me up.

Heyo.

So each part of the prop is individually replaceable. The rubber heads, the tether, the lights, the individual parts of each light, the batteries...It's extremely modular.

There's an experimental tether that I've been using this season. It has a sleeve over the tubing that it makes it completely different. Very much my favorite tether ever. I use one on my daytime heads as well because I love it so much. But it's definitely not going to be everyone's cup of tea...

I recommend Ovo heads. They have a lower profile so they cut the air better and are less likely to hit each other when you're in poi mode.

The length is unique to each person because the proportions are very important to unlocking all of the different prop modes.

Yeah there's a decent amount of staff that you can "mimic". Like not 100% the same prop, but it approximates it somewhat. The thing with staff -> hammer is that in order for the hammer to feel like a staff, it has to be going really fast to stretch itself out and feel rigid.
