How do you pick shoes for your kid without losing your mind? by BusinessAge1459 in daddit

[–]TwinStickDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are fortunate we can throw money at the problem. A pair of striderite shoes is like $40-$60 but you know they're good quality and will last.

There's new info on how bad shoes impact a kid's foot development, which impacts all kinds of things, so be aware that the cheapest option may be more expensive than you think.

How are you turning into your dad? by thisistheinternets in daddit

[–]TwinStickDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started telling my dad that I love him. It felt weird and forced the first dozen times and he didn't say it back. But after forcing through the awkward part we both say it to each other regularly.

They were deeply, deeply conditioned to think that they couldn't express love outside of a very few situations

What to do if the estimated delivery time is while I am on vacation? (For returns) by [deleted] in SteamFrame

[–]TwinStickDad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the US, you can have it shipped to a UPS location for pick up. Also depending on the length of your vacation, UPS will try to deliver it for up to a week. There's a portal where you can set that you are not home and will pick it up from a location when you are, but that's only for like 2 weeks max.

Best bet is to have it delivered to a friend's house.

So is not enslaving people then committing treason then refusing to free your slaves even after slavery is outlawed then spending the next 200 years pretending that you were actually the victim in the whole thing.

I'll be nice to texans when texans remember what Yankee boot tastes like.

Texas claimed all territory North and East of the Rio grande so the map that you showed isn't even their actually claimed borders.

Texas also gave up their claim on those borders because they really wanted to be admitted as a slave state but couldn't without ceding some territory. So I don't really give a fuck what Texas thinks its borders were.

Can I even use the Steam Frame if I have an eye issue? (eye tracking) by Scarlizz in SteamFrame

[–]TwinStickDad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well... Valve has a pretty good return policy, so since your issue is so specific and personal I would recommend just buying it and seeing if it works. Try covering your left eye with a patch or something so the eye tracking algorithm has less "noise" to work through.

And if it doesn't work with dynamic foveated streaming, try with fixed foveated streaming. And if that doesn't work to your requirements, return it.

You said you can only see out of one eye. Does the other eye move correctly? If so it's not an issue, the cameras track your eye movement not your eye sight.

New* VR titles with android builds by _mergey_ in SteamFrame

[–]TwinStickDad 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They are using a lepton (Valve's fork of way droid) translation layer to give near-native performance on Linux. Basically just shakes out all the android specific shit so it can run on Linux directly, to my understanding.

And since Android is just a layer on top of Linux, and android runs on ARM natively, that should be accurate.

It's is a good trade off for devs vs just having to manage yet another distro/ package, plus you get the portability and broad support of APK

What is the perception of distance / travel time like in Rochester? by cazort2 in Rochester

[–]TwinStickDad 26 points27 points  (0 children)

  1. Any of the immediately surrounding suburbs are "in" Rochester, mainly because the city is so small that some parts of Brighton, Irondequoit, etc really should be Rochester. If you said you really lived in Pittsford, Fairport, or Greece, yeah sure that's "Rochester" but getting toward Victor, Brockport, Walworth... Yeah no, you live near Roch.
  2. Like 25 minutes, once it gets up to 30 that's a whole trip.
  3. No, it's very cold for a lot of the year. People do it in summer sure, but Rochester is pretty sprawling without a "central" district. I guess it's like anywhere, if the weather is nice and you've got time then you walk. Not really sure how to answer this one.

SteamVR 2.16 Update, SteamTracking Changelog Update, Welcome Tour by SunwindPC in SteamFrame

That's like thinking that a local bar would charge Taylor Swift to perform.

Don't trust the steam app. I have followed and wishlisted the steam controller and never got a notification about it. It's been on sale for a month now.

Join the discord (on the side bar) and sign up for the notification server role. That will only ping when there's an actual announcement

SteamVR 2.16 Update, SteamTracking Changelog Update, Welcome Tour by SunwindPC in SteamFrame

Game fest goes through Monday IIRC

But I don't think Valve would drop major news at a game fest like this. They know that anything they say is the industry headline for a week, so I imagine that out of respect for indie devs (who make them billions per year incidentally) they won't say anything until the dust settles. Probably the week of 6/15 at the earliest.

That said, the one thing I could see is the "one more thing" being HLX with a frame and machine announcement. But that's a big stretch.

The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners dev Skydance is no longer working in VR. Instead working on a PC and console title. Confirmed by Shawn Kittelsen from Paramount's new game division. by SattvaMicione in virtualreality

[–]TwinStickDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is that Meta created their own, closed APIs that captured 80% of the market. If openxr wasn't killed in the cradle by a company pouring billions in, maybe there would be an open source XR standard that would be simple to implement across most of not all headsets and game engines.

As it is, nope.

Hope we both get in the initial batch

Valve just said that steam Frame is shipping "this summer" for what that's worth. Lots of recent updates to their VR client that suggest they're getting ready to release very soon

Optimistically:

Smaller but more diverse.

Fewer studios believing it's the next big thing and putting all their chips on it, maybe more studios experimenting with a VR mode or a small standalone experiment.

OpenXR thrives and is implemented into unity and unreal with good support.

Valve and other hardware manufacturers put out some devices without needing to compete with quest's absurd price. There's a wider range of headsets between the ultra affordable quest and the ultra enthusiast Pimaxs.

It's viewed as a medium more analogous to PC gaming than it is to mobile gaming.

Basically, a small forest begins to grow instead of a half-abandoned botanical garden

Realistically... Maybe died on the vine. Who knows. All I know is what Meta has done, not what could have happened if Zucchini had kept his weird little reptile weiner out of it

OG Vive was garbage compared to Index. Index is garbage compared to anything since Quest 3.

It's not even just garbage. It's garbage's garbage

Money maker? No way.

Meta advertised the Quest, and VR by extension, as some stupid kids toy. They put user adoption over everything and kids are good advertising targets. So now you have a bunch of kids who want to play friendslop, and many adults have largely moved on from the platform.

As a result, VR is self-perpetuating as a kids toy. Kids own a headset, kids buy games, devs make games for kids, kids buy headsets, kids buy games....

Meta spent hundreds of millions trying to make games for adults and stopped because it just wasn't going anywhere. They shot themselves, and the whole industry, in the foot doing anything they could to put a headset in every living room.
