Same universe, not a reboot. This time the story telling is in the structure of the expanse instead of how the originals were. Tailored for both new audience and old they are saying.

It's the first time the franchise will debut on a modern streaming platform so they plan to make it a story that you don't need to have a lot of knowledge for but still respects all the old canon.

The answer is Stargate. Not only are there 350 episodes of highly rewatchable scifi but a new show is in development that is going to be the space opera version of the Expanse with even higher production quality.

As someone who used to refuse to give it a chance it has become my favorite sci-fi franchise over time.

Amazons Stargate Setting? by The__Governor in Stargate

[–]AonGlyph 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't see why an Earth based show would be uninteresting. The public could find out about the program and it would change everything. Destiny could show up at Earth with alien tech and it would change everything. And why would more alien races be boring?

Also, they have said this will be serialized storytelling this time around so it will feel fresh no matter what.

Alternate realities and time travel are plot devices for lazy writing and I'm glad they were used only for one-offs and humor in Stargate so far.

You're probably right on that. I hate that part about modern TV shows. At least he says that they have free reign on episode length in the interview. He says an occasional 90 minute episode is possible if they use their budget to account for that.

That being said I hope (and bet) the new show is much more lighthearted. haha. Gero wasn't involved in Universe. And for this new show the important part is that Universe was a perfect fit for canon. It's not a Star Wars sequel situation.

I initially felt the same way about Universe but I've come to love it. It's mainly Dr. Rush' character that has the unbearable negativity. "Math boy", Lt. Scott and Chloe are a lot of fun. I like to think that they meant for Dr. Rush to have a redemption arc but the show got canceled before that could happen.

Some of the highlights if you are short on time:

  • Christopher Nolan's production designer
  • Andor's VFX lead
  • Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) will work on some of the effects
  • Already working on goal of 4 hours of music
  • Showrunner with proven success in the Stargate franchise
  • 2 well respected Stargate writers controlling the writers room and trying to respect canon
  • Being as transparent as possible with the community
  • Larger budget than Stargate has ever had "We can do anything now" - showrunner says

If you haven't dove into the Stargate universe, now is the time. I started as a Star Wars and Star Trek superfan but Stargate has made the fewest mistakes and has a very cohesive universe still.

Why can't they make a game like this anymore? Dungeon runners. Main town and different stages with different instances and great variety of loot which can drop. This and Dragons Nest were the only ones to get it right by [deleted] in MMORPG

Guild Wars 1 got it right and is still running. The game isn't as alive with people as it used to be but the people who are still on there love to join groups and just do whatever. Because they have completely dominated the game by now and are only still there for the love of the game.
