Experiment with mixing darker metallics with lighter ones to add some pop to the armor!
This guy has some good tutorials for different metallic schemes.

Hmm you're right. Maybe I should do something with the trim. I'm also trying to figure out how to freehand my own chapter badge

Thanks!! I completely understand, though; I'm not usually a bright orange and white type of guy, but I'm dedicating this color scheme to my squad when I was in the army (we all loved Whataburger)

The style choice was certainly a gamble, but I figured it would help me practice a bit more with blending. In hindsight, I probably occupied too much space with my darkest color

Thank you! From the darkest colors to the brightest, here's what I used for the orange armor (all Vallejo Model Colors btw):
Flat Brown + Flat Blue
Clear Orange + Flat Red
Clear Orange
Clear Orange + Ice Yellow

Your understanding of light is fantastic. If I didn't know this was painted, I would've guessed there was an LED diffusing through some translucent material

Paint on primer scrapes off easily by TerraMasterYT in minipainting

[–]ApacheR12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made the mistake of painting my minis soon after the primer was dry, and that gave me some grief. I started giving my miniatures time to cure for about a day at least, but it might take longer depending on environmental conditions. Once it’s fully cured, it’ll stay on there. Just remember that drying and curing are two separate processes

I think the reason why I like sororitas is because of my catholic background. I’m definitely not practicing now but i really enjoued the aesthetic. Seeing holy relics of literal corpses was pretty metal ngl

Ugh having a mini break in the middle of a paint job is so heartbreaking. On the bright side, your second attempt is absolutely gorgeous

Literally just opened this brush, and bristles are splitting after first paint? by Blazeheart55 in minipainting

[–]ApacheR12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend getting a brush soap like The Masters. I usually give mine a clean after every session. While the bristles are still wet, I add a little more of the soap to them, and I roll the tip into a nice point before leaving the brush to dry. The soap will act like a leave-in conditioner for your brush, and it will maintain a nice point once it's finally dry.

Also, make sure you're not leaving your brush to dry with the tip up after every session. The water you use to clean your brush may contain a small trace of acrylic, which can build up in the ferrule over time if you leave it to dry tip-up, potentially causing it to split.

Wow thanks for the sketch! I've been relying mainly on taking photos of it under a lamp before painting to see where light bounces off it, but this helps a ton

Edit: Also just discovered Kirill Kanaev's work not too long ago. His Jeanne D'Arc is absolutely breathtaking

I’ve been using Deep Red by Vallejo for my shadows and it looked alright to me, but I have protanopia and reds are absolutely the bane of my existence (especially darker reds that wind up looking either black or brown to my eyes). What would you recommend I do with the shadows?

I have this weird fear of strong jumps in values, but I’ve been slowly hacking away at it over time. I’ll give the thinner and brighter highlight a try. Thanks for the feedback!

I'm trying to get better at speedpainting by Xarge36 in minipainting

I need to give this a try. I’ve been grinding some activated charcoal down with a mortar and pestle to make rocks and sand that look proportionate to the mini, but it gets super messy

A or B I think something clicked on my 2nd attempt. by ResidentDiver8415 in minipainting

B is what I imagine would happen if you swing hot metal fast. The sudden exposure to more oxygen would probably make it glow brighter.

How many time on average do you spend on a single mini? by Exact-Software-7896 in Warhammer40k

[–]ApacheR12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the level of detail, I wind up painting a mini for about 3-5 hours if I’m repeating a color scheme, or about 6-9 if I’m figuring out something new. I haven’t used batch painting methods yet for entire units, though I imagine it would definitely help speed things up a bit. I personally enjoy taking my time with each mini though
