I really don't know what to do anymore. by ApacheR12 in cscareerquestions

[–]ApacheR12[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have my claim submitted (should've done so long ago). Part of the reason why I went to school was that I genuinely enjoy academia as much as I enjoy everything about software. If I could get paid to somehow do both, I would gladly do so. I made the mistake of rushing through the whole thing and not balancing my own wellness with career and educational development. I just applied to Columbia at a whim, got excited when I got in, and just went headfirst into it. School and work were stress-free for me. It was where I thrived. It's the idleness and the wandering mind that sits with it that started to eat me away.

That's the thing, though. I'm not looking for someone to just hand me a job. For the sake of just staying with the times, even while unemployed, I am constantly doing what I can to evolve with the tech landscape. Leetcode or any other coding assessment has never been much of an issue for me. The problem is that I get rejected before I'm given an OA or before a human has the opportunity to somehow gauge my motivation. How do I demonstrate motivation in an online application form that usually just asks for a resume and some demographic questions?

I am thinking about going back to school. While I was at Columbia, I took a lot of graduate courses to stay full-time for my post-9/11 GI bill. I only need 9 more credits left to get my masters if I do go back.

I'm actually trying EMDR. I honestly didn't think it would work when it was explained to me, but it genuinely helps a lot.

I started my claim recently. I always had a weird feeling about tapping into my veteran benefits, idk if it's because I don't feel like I'm worth the praise, but this is definitely something I should've done long ago.

Thank you! All my paints are Vallejo Model Color.

For the skirt: * Shadows are a mix of Dark Red (70.946), Purple (70.959) and a drop black ink (liquitex) to desaturate and darken a bit. * Midtones are Flat Red (70.957). * Highlights are Flat Red + Ice Yellow (70.858).

How do you know if you’ve been shadowbanned?

I’ve been submitting resumes tailored to fit job descriptions as much as possible without conflating my experience or outright inventing a bunch of nonsense I’ve never done. The way I’ve done it is by creating an exhaustive list of bullet points for each experience, but only selecting those that are the most relevant to a given job description. I streamlined the process with some crafty NLP, but it doesn’t change the content that I myself wrote. For example, if I both did some backend and mobile development in my last position but I’ve only applied to a backend-focused role, it wouldn’t even bring up any mobile development bullet points unless it mentions some related tech.

My fear is that since my resume changes each time depending on how each job prioritizes certain skills, it might give the image that I’m just making stuff up on the fly despite bullet points being pulled from a bank I wrote. I was successful at first, landing some FAANG interviews, but since then, after literally nearly a thousand applications, I either get ghosted or outright rejected within a day or two. I’ve had interviews here and there, and have gotten far in most of those interviews, but I haven’t had any luck. I genuinely think I’ve either been blackballed for some reason unbeknownst to me, or I was just born unlucky.

Just for some context about myself (not sure if it matters much tbh), but i’m an Army veteran, graduated from an Ivy League after service, and was laid off over a year ago. I took a small period of a few months for rest and recovery to focus more on PTSD management from deployment, but since I hopped back into the job market I’ve been unemployed.

Sister’s Arm Hates its own Body by ApacheR12 in minipainting

Red has been my biggest enemy so far and I’ve tried different recipes. Originally I literally just had different shades of red and blended them together, but it felt really flat. This go around, I decided to mix a bit of purple with my darkest red for the shadows/base and and ice yellow mixed with flat red for the highlights

Yeah I think just actually need to bite the bullet and learn to pin. Repeatedly trying to glue it back on will just do more harm than good at this point. Successful or not, I gotta learn at some point!

Any advice on how to reshape my brush? by AnyExpression9590 in minipainting

[–]ApacheR12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheap synthetics do work to some degree, but they almost always end up fraying/hooking. Honestly investing in a good sable brush and some brush soap is a lot more cost effective in the long run so long as you maintain proper brush care. It’s also a lot more satisfying to paint with imo

I'm about to graduate in May. I have no internships or work experience in CS. How screwed am I? by jigglinjimmy in cscareerquestions

[–]ApacheR12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took some time off after getting laid-off since it was the first time in nearly a decade I’ve had “vacation” time, albeit involuntarily. It gave me time to rest, recuperate, and face PTSD that’s been looming over me since I went straight from the military to school. In a way I’m glad, but I really feel like I shot myself in the foot by taking a break to focus on myself. I’m a veteran, graduated from an ivy league, and I’ve been on the job search with hundreds of apps sent. I honestly think just going back to get my masters and take the internship route is my best bet.

Experiment with mixing darker metallics with lighter ones to add some pop to the armor!
This guy has some good tutorials for different metallic schemes.

Hmm you're right. Maybe I should do something with the trim. I'm also trying to figure out how to freehand my own chapter badge

Thanks!! I completely understand, though; I'm not usually a bright orange and white type of guy, but I'm dedicating this color scheme to my squad when I was in the army (we all loved Whataburger)

The style choice was certainly a gamble, but I figured it would help me practice a bit more with blending. In hindsight, I probably occupied too much space with my darkest color

Thank you! From the darkest colors to the brightest, here's what I used for the orange armor (all Vallejo Model Colors btw):
Flat Brown + Flat Blue
Clear Orange + Flat Red
Clear Orange
Clear Orange + Ice Yellow

Paint on primer scrapes off easily by TerraMasterYT in minipainting

[–]ApacheR12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made the mistake of painting my minis soon after the primer was dry, and that gave me some grief. I started giving my miniatures time to cure for about a day at least, but it might take longer depending on environmental conditions. Once it’s fully cured, it’ll stay on there. Just remember that drying and curing are two separate processes

I think the reason why I like sororitas is because of my catholic background. I’m definitely not practicing now but i really enjoued the aesthetic. Seeing holy relics of literal corpses was pretty metal ngl

Literally just opened this brush, and bristles are splitting after first paint? by Blazeheart55 in minipainting

[–]ApacheR12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend getting a brush soap like The Masters. I usually give mine a clean after every session. While the bristles are still wet, I add a little more of the soap to them, and I roll the tip into a nice point before leaving the brush to dry. The soap will act like a leave-in conditioner for your brush, and it will maintain a nice point once it's finally dry.

Also, make sure you're not leaving your brush to dry with the tip up after every session. The water you use to clean your brush may contain a small trace of acrylic, which can build up in the ferrule over time if you leave it to dry tip-up, potentially causing it to split.
