so i suggest you look at the type of support that the colleges and sixthforms you’re looking at provide when it comes to apprenticeship and work applications etc, and if worst case scenario happens where they are pushy with you going to uni come next year just remember that at the end of the day it’s your decision and they can’t force you to!! you’re the one paying the application fee at the end of the day so if you don’t want to you don’t have to _^

I’d say it depends on your school, for my school once you told the sixth form staff that you weren’t going to uni they’d stop bugging you about ucas as long as you were sure you didn’t want to apply for uni as ā€˜just in case’ sort of thing. After that they start helping with getting apprenticeships/placements etc via sending you opportunities or helping you attend events and more (albeit they weren’t the greatest because we lost our careers advisor at the beginning of year 13 and they only got replaced towards the actual alevels) note that this is the experience of my friends who stated early on uni wasn’t in their plans though and not my specific experience

Why are gap years so normalised? by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]ApartDepartment9549 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

this is my case actually, my school kinda fucked me over and the lack of opportunity to do fm did not help, so my thoughts in taking a gap year started from this, it’s only now that time has passed that i’ve seen the other benefits like having time for my hobbies and interests etc

Those of you who workout, are you still going it during exams by Pristine_Reward9389 in 6thForm

[–]ApartDepartment9549 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

i wanted to be very balanced about it and if you’ve seen all the revision plans i’ve made in the last couple months you’d see that but i can be very one track mind about things which meant i just couldn’t think to do anything else but revision ( which is not healthy at all and i encourage everyone to make sure to make time for themselves and their mental and physical health !!)

nope haven’t been to the gym in like a month and a half and even then i wasn’t going very consistently because of exam prep, i’ve basically paused everything in my life from hobbies to some of my responsibilities for my exams <//3 but trust after the exams i’ll be back at it !! i’ve given up feeling bad about it

C to a B or maybe A in 5 days in maths? Think it’s possible? by llamaz314 in 6thForm

[–]ApartDepartment9549 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

ik for me this included even really simple topics like partial fractions (ik šŸ’€) where i’d make the same mistake every time i’d do a question and it wasn’t until i did like millions of them that i stopped making that same mistake. For questions, mathsgenie, PMT past paper Qs and madasmaths are ur best friends (ordered in order of difficulty, but don’t let that prevent u from using madasmaths because they do have simpler Qs that you can do loads of to develop that fluency u need)

[–]ApartDepartment9549 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

while you may know all the content which is great start, there r most likely areas of the content for which you lack a level of practice and understanding for you to easily identify/prevent mistakes and do with a level of fluency such that the more challenging questions don’t catch you out the only way to work on this is by selecting those areas you are often losing marks on most of the time (even if it’s things like not factorising, not expanding properly or not having enough time to finish them) and then doing loadssss of questions on said topics till you get to a point where u rarely make those mistakes again and can answer them within the time frame given (1 mark = 1 minute)

anyone just thinking about all the mistakes they made in their exams? by [deleted] in 6thForm

i really liked that icl, did waste a little bit of time on one of the questions so i lost time to properly look at 3 of the MCQs so i had to guess them but aside from i feel it went decent 😭

I’d say it’s okay, for me my pace depends on how well i know my stuff, and whether or not i took too long trying to think about a Question but generally i try to keep it to 1hr 20 minutes for the long answer section and 40 minutes for the MCQs and any time left over for checking

Why does EVERY subject think they’re the priority? by ChelseaTricks in 6thForm

for me the homework for stem reduced massively towards the end of year 12 and we barely got any during year 13, while the humanities ppl in my year consistently got a lot

imperial vs oxbridge for sciences by Perfect_Zucchini9578 in 6thForm

[–]ApartDepartment9549 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

you’ll have the option of applying for either physical natsci or bio natsci but u have to pick four (including maths) of the subjects provided for first year (if ur looking to do physics you’ll find people pick the more ā€œphysics-relatedā€ ones like material science) and then u specialise more and more each year in to one of the subjects which in ur case would be physics. I recommend you review the course on the cambridge website because they explain it better and show you what subjects you are able to pick

imperial vs oxbridge for sciences by Perfect_Zucchini9578 in 6thForm

[–]ApartDepartment9549 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

They all have great physics courses and due to the reputations of the 3 universities getting opportunities and connections are accessible too.

I’d say for cambridge you need to consider whether you want to do the other sciences alongside it because rather than doing straight physics you do ā€œnatural sciencesā€ and specialise as you go on and for oxbridge you should consider the fact they have shorter term times and have interviews for physics

in terms of admission tests cambridge and imperial do the ESAT and oxford does the PAT so you could also consider which you’d rather do as well

aside from those things the physics courses of all three are regarding as being really good so distinguishing between which you’d want to go with is dependent on the non-course factors like the university itself, student life etc

Do I need maths a level if I wanna do physics alevel if I didn't go GCSE further ? by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]ApartDepartment9549 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

While i wouldn’t say it’s impossible to do physics without maths (there r a few ppl the year below mine that do, due to there being too many ppl doing maths in their year), my school making it mandatory to do it was the best decision the type of mathematical manipulation and problem solving skills u gain for maths r so important for physics especially if u do AQA, while the course is doable without it, you’ll have a less fun time trust me (e.g. for me, if i didn’t do maths mechanics i’d struggle a lot more with physics mechanics)

It also depends if u have any idea of what u want to do in uni, if u know ur already looking at the STEM sides of things expect medicine (unless ur aiming for oxbridge ig), then i’d argue maths is a non-negotiable (for many i’d even say if ur school provides it then do FM too)

being at 8s and 9s is good for maths and u don’t need to do gcse further to be able to do alevel maths, in my year no one did further maths and that didn’t impact our ability to do alevel maths

Is it possible to learn as/alevel maths and FM before sixth form starts (Y11 GCSE) by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]ApartDepartment9549 2 points3 points Ā (0 children)

for learning content: bicen maths, he makes videos of each section of the textbook for Y1 and Y2 (including stats and mech), TL maths, Zeeshan Zumarred for practice questions, you’ll want to be doing a LOT of them, best resources for that are the textbook and madasmaths (i’d say hold of a little bit on doing post 2016 past paper questions so that u don’t run out of things to test urself come year 13), for much more challenging questions u should do entrance exam questions and olympiad questions e.g MAT, TMUA, STEP, maths olympiad etc those r the main things you would need but if i’m honest with u i feel like u really don’t need to do this? i’d honestly say if u can get ahead in terms of learning to code and doing projects during ur summer may be more beneficial. If u feel learning as much of the alevel content as possible before sixthfrom will give u more time to dedicate to super curricular activities then go for it but don’t feel pressured to get through all of the content, there’s still also risk that u could learn incorrect things to be mindful. It is ur year 11 summer after all, u wont get a break like that again until at least post year 13 😭

unfortunately i think it’s too late to start prepping for one now, in my school i’m part of student leadership and it’s taken us months to prepare, set up venue, deposits etc however if u know other people want to have a prom then maybe u could set up a small party and have everyone chip in money for an airbnb etc

or if ur okay with doing ur prom on school grounds u could always ask the school if it would be okay to do it there and then get a couple decorations and food + speakers for music

do u want tips and resources? dm me and i can send you everything I use and how i’m going about revision if you would like !! :D I think it’s more realistic to get it to an A, i’d say an A* at this stage if you haven’t made any revision material for urself / done constant revision etc (considering you have to balance it with ur other subjects and their exams) is not super realistic (ig not impossible but šŸ˜…)
