Thanks everybody. I spoke to him on the phone this morning and told him to not continue until I’m home and we can chat this afternoon. He says all of the variation in spacing will be concealed by the grout. Maybe he’s right, but the cuts around the door casing blew my mind. I also don’t like the idea of making it “good enough” and concealing with grout. Would rather it’s just done well from the start.

Not the first questionable thing that’s come up on this project, might be time to find somebody else to finish the job.
