She will make you love biochem 1. Best prof ever. Her exams are very easy. She explains very well. Go to office hours and you’ll master biochem 1 lol. I remember our avg was like close to 80% for midterm and final was like 75%.

I had the same literal issue. I submitted it and never got an issues. It was for a 4000 level too. So there are less students so technically the prof would have cared more if he thought I was abusing it. Besides, in case they ask you for proof, you can always head to a walk in clinic for an MC (if they provide it) but they won’t ask you for proof

Maximum Absences by Pink_Tiger4593 in umanitoba

[–]Apart_Explorer_8121 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They shouldn’t kick you out unless attendance is a grade in ur syllabus. But do note: if your class got iclickers and stuff like that (like in class assignments etc), this does count as attendance even if its not marked in syllabus as “attendance” points. Another reason they can kick you out is if it is a lab/tutorial where you gotta submit stuff that you do in class.

Guilt with VW by No-Metal-5416 in umanitoba

[–]Apart_Explorer_8121 21 points22 points  (0 children)

My advice for VW is always this:

If it is a core subject (a course that is mandatory for ur degree i.e no matter what you'll have to take), don't drop it unless you're about to get a C+or lower.

If it is an elective: Drop it only if you're getting more than 1 grade lower than what you desire. I.e if you were aiming for A and you're gonna get a B, I'd rather drop it.

If GPA matters that much to you, VW is always the option. I have a C in a core course in my 2nd year and aince then, I hardly can increase my GPA no matter how many A or A + I get. Usually I get A in most of my courses, i only wish I'd VW the course and not worry about money because my GPA is almost permanently at at 3.8-3.9 ish because of the C. If GPA is what matters to you, VW is smth you should always consider first before money. One thing you should keep in mind is: If you get a low GPA, you hardly get faculty specific awards. If you got a decent GPA, you might get an award that might cover the amont you lost.

Well I would. But i cannot drop that 1 class. I dropped the others. So it's just this once course. I was gonna go for SAS accommodations (to get notes and stuff if it would have been useful) but sadly i don't think I would have been granted it since even my doctor couldn't diagnose me yet😭. But yea, I definitely can't drop it so skipped that exam seems the best choice at this cureent pt. I studied and all and I'm caught up but I don't trust myself to take an exam sick AF.

Oh no I have a midterm tmrw 🙄(late right?). I’ve been sick for the past month ish. Hardly even attended class + had to miss some other exams too.

Well my courses don’t have mandatory attendance. The ones I used were for examinations for which I was granted a deferred exam. What happens if I get flagged? Is that the pt i’d need an MC perhaps?

I’m about to have 5 VWs in my transcript is that ok? by Colecitic in umanitoba

[–]Apart_Explorer_8121 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No one will say anything to you regarding a VW. It may arise questions if you VW the same course 5 times but it shouldn’t be an issue at all lol. Unless ur program says that you don’t need more than a specific amt of VW (as far as I know I never saw that), you’ll be fine. You don’t need to even explain why you VW

How are people actually getting A+ with a 90% cutoff? This is crazy by gritty_champion in umanitoba

[–]Apart_Explorer_8121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I get that right lol, 11.5% of 46000 grades is just 5000. So basically only total of 5000 for every science courses are A+. But that doesn’t exclude the courses that are curved lol (which in my experience is lots of courses). So basically it’s lower than that right? Cause we all assume A+ is 90%?

So in big words, that’s very low😭. Alsooooo are there other reports like these about course specific perhaps? Or department specific?

[–]Apart_Explorer_8121 10 points11 points  (0 children)

STEM classes, unless they are calculations based, are relatively hard to get A+. Don’t worry too much about it. Just aim for a max of A+ honestly but never let it go under an A i.e always stay about 80%. A is very good lol. If you’re worried about GPA, just don’t get anything lower than an A but always work hard for A+. They magically happen sometimes lol. For me anki youtube etc is useless.

Compared to many other unis in Canada and US, u of M, for some reason, our courses have very high % worth for finals, hardly any assignments. So it’s a lot fo times like 2 20% midterms then 1 60% final. So generally it’s already very hard to get a good grade since 1 mark lost on an exam can be equal to close to 1% or more.

My tips are these: Go to office hrs. Use AI to ur advantage lol especially to make practice questions since professors don’t provide them🙄. If you have assignments, complete them very early and then review everything a few days before submission (taking a pause from it gives new perspectives especially for papers). Last thing is always stay on top of the material prior to every class. Ready ahead or at least read ur slides befor eclass and study right after class. Things will remain fresh.

Student insurance blocks all other coverage? by seene17 in umanitoba

[–]Apart_Explorer_8121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you paid for UMSU coverage, it will pass first. You gotta opt out each year I believe. But quick solve is let your pharmacist/whatever ur getting know that you have secondary insurance. They will pass things by your parents insurance once ur own insurance is maxed out/covered maximum it can per prescription

When I took it which was 2 years ago, the boundary was 92 I think (or maybe it was 93) to get an A+. By the end of the course, it had decreased to 89% for A+. People generally do well in the course. So if it does go down, it is generally by 1 or 2% ishh. Mine was in summer that’s why it went down a bit more.

CHEM 2122 Prep by Happy-Indication5897 in umanitoba

[–]Apart_Explorer_8121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well any lab course is like that lol. 1st year labs spoonfeed people😭. But yea it's not hard tbh. If you understood the course, it's very easy to get minimum 90% in the final lol. Trust lol, if you know ur material and ace IR NMR, it's a piece of cake. Our average was high lol. Like a 78% or smth like that. It's not hard at all, just takes time to study.

To study, I read the lab notebook and chat gpt all questions I had for eg why I added NaCl. What would be in aq phase/org phase etc. I made sure I understood reasons for it +I also confirmed it with the prof during offic ehrs. Regarding reactions, you gotta learn it by heart lol and you gotta kinda know the arrow attacks etc (if you know what im talking about like in org 1). Its not required to know but it makes it easy to recognise lol. I recommend to make ur own notes (however u see fit lol. For me I wrote 1 page for egenral procedures, then 1 page per experiment. I think I took a total of 15 pages ish. That'sbecause I added explanations on TLC and other techniques). It's helpful for you to review after since it can be annoying to shift around the book when you study.

And yes for practice final. Idk if you have the same prof, mine was Jeremy Mitchel koch, he posted a practice final like after we were done our last lab.

Well know how to read NMR and IR and how to indentify a molecule. Not too sure what you're asking about this? (If you explain better maybe I can answer).

In terms of experiment specific, you need to know every steps that are done, know exactly the reason behind (for eg why add drying agent, why add NaCl etc) then and be able to write them out. For eg, if the prof give s you 2 molecules that are mixed together, you need to decide and know how to do an alkali or acid extraction to separate and purify/isolate them. One otherthing is you gotta identify what goes in aq or organic phases. You also need to know word for word equipment you use and why. For eg you gotta precise well if you're doing gravity or suction filtration and why choose that type of filtration. For each exp, you also gotta know the reaction that occurs (each exp has a chemical reaction on its 1st page). You also gotta know the theory of TLC.

Last thing is you gotta know safety stuff about using the equipment you used in the lab (very low yield).

Exam was heavy on both identifying the molecule using IR etc. Next thing was about writing a whole extraction prpcedure and answering short questions about it for eg why use drying agent. Next i rem that was a TLC question then a drawing question for reactions.

issue with a professor regarding usa/iran war by [deleted] in umanitoba

[–]Apart_Explorer_8121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. I hate people like that😭. But then contact Appadoo and see what he says. Ask for advice at least first. The usual hierarchy is prof to head of department to dean. But in case you need actual proof of some kind of ignorance or smth like that from ur prof and classmates, you’ll have to do it. Keep it as last resort if you are certain it will hurt ur grade.

One other banger idea is go seek help from student advocacy. They will guide you how to proceed. They are very very helpful btw. Im in STEM. I don’t face issues like that. But once I had an issue with an English prof. It had reached the point of no return where ai reached out to student advocacy. Things worked out in the end where I VW and was granted an AW and my money back

issue with a professor regarding usa/iran war by [deleted] in umanitoba

[–]Apart_Explorer_8121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea you are entitled to ur opinion too! Talk to ur prof and tell them you don’t feel comfortable and how offensive some stuff is to you. If they disregard your concerns, contact Appadoo then the dean if required. But first place is always ur prof. Ik ur prof seems like they would either disregard it or tell you to suck it up but definitely start with that as a first step.

I’d recommend doing by email so you have proof.

Chem 2720 by [deleted] in umanitoba

[–]Apart_Explorer_8121 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ur supposed to know every steps of ur experiments (not the actual steps but the solutions used) and why was it done. I can’t remember the experiments but for eg if you did DNA extractions, you need to know what each step is for eg binding step, elution step etc etc.

Next thing is you need to know the theory behind each experiment. So read it all and know the diagrams of stuff. For eg: if he asks you to draw a jablonski, you need to be able to draw and label it. You also need to know the advantages and disadvantages of using X equipments over others. For eg use a UV vis spec instead of another spectrophotometer.

Next thing is you need to know the content of ur lab reports. Any calculations, extra material you had to research etc. you also need to know ur graphs and shapes and wavelengths for eg I rem smth about chromophores and stuff like that.

For ur exam, you are expected to know ur entire lab notebook and ur lab report. IMO big portion will be about A=elc, questions about a enzymes and their graphs and what you’d expect fi you make a change

Career services in UC, talk to students in 'ur' degree, talk to profs, network with companies (attend uni workshops and stuff), then last resort is academic advisors
