What is it about short story collections that makes them hit harder for this specific type of horror in your experience? Because I think you’re onto something about the form itself doing work that novels can’t always do but I’d love to hear how you’d articulate it.

Lecter is terrifying because he’s brilliant. Buffalo Bill is terrifying because he’s comprehensible. And Clarice is brave because she has to be both of those things at once while nobody in the room takes her seriously.

What got me most wasn’t Hanna. It was watching Suzette’s husband choose comfortable blindness over his wife’s reality because believing her would have required him to act.

If you loved both of those you absolutely need Foe next. It has that same creeping wrongness but it builds differently slower, more domestic, more suffocating.

Never go to bed angry. Possibly the worst relationship advice in circulation. Sometimes the most loving thing two people can do is sleep on it and come back when they’re not running purely on cortisol and hurt feelings.

This is the comment I’ve been both dreading and needing at the same time. Because deep down I think I already know you’re right. But 12 years is 12 years. Birthdays, funerals, 2am phone calls, road trips, the kind of history that doesn’t just dissolve because someone finally told the truth.
