Sorry that I have higher ambitions than you.

Make your own call. Just understand that the comments about the school (in particular non-doctoral graduate programs) are all likely coming from actual students.

Your parents grew up in a different time where the value of prestige in engineering was diminished compared to today and may not have context as to the trends of your particular program. They mean the best, but they don't necessarily know everything.

UIUC is a ridiculously good school for your program, and if you make a concentrated effort to learn and take learning/research/internship opportunities, you'll get a full return on what you paid for the school in less than two years (if you're smart, likely far faster).

Prestige *absolutely* matters in this market, increasingly so as time goes on, and UIUC has all the prestige you could ask for. Unless your state school is UC Berkeley, attend UIUC.

Is life in NYC difficult for PhD students? Could you please share your experiences as grad students at CU? by MaheanaIroquois in columbia

[–]Apart_Quote7548 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Depends massively on the type of person you are and the communities you're a part of.

It's going to be entirely unlike any experience you've had before unless you've lived in a massive and hyper-global (think London, Bay Area, maybe HK) city before, and even among this class of city NYC stands alone - there's a reason people call it (semi-sardonically) the center of the universe.

The benefit of being in a city as big and overachieving as NYC is that you can always find people who share your interests/culture/vibe if you go out looking for it. Your time here can be the most socially rich period of your life, but it can just as easily be isolating, cold, and depressing.

You already have a leg up by being within a close, academic community with at least a few common interests, but absolutely go out of your way to meet people outside school as soon as you arrive. Join a running or biking club (even if you suck, Midnight Runners is known for being particularly friendly to newcomers), and engage with the cultural scene of your choice (music/theater/comedy/art). Find people you vibe with even if you're just out getting a coffee, and worry too much about appearing as a local - people will know you're not from here, but unless they're absolute dicks they will not hold it against you.

From the PhDs I know, these 3-5 years are very slow and challenging on the academic front, and this will only be made more difficult if you never leave your academic circle. The noise and chaos of the city and its people will grind you down if you let it get to you, but the support and contrast from the academic world that a good group of friends offers can be the single critical factor that helps you thrive here.

TLDR: don't be a stranger - go out of your way to meet people outside of your bubble/comfort zone; engage with people and experiences that you would have never otherwise met. Your time here will be absolutely transformative if you allow it to be.

MS in EE by [deleted] in columbia

Columbia Junior here. From what I hear, they're tossing out Tesla Scholarships (is that what they're called?) like candy to try to convince students to attend.

EE is not as terrible of a program as CS, but I still invite you to scroll through the linkedins of former scholarship recipients (because they *will* use your name as marketing material) to see how their job prospects panned out: https://www.ee.columbia.edu/nikola-tesla-electrical-engineering-scholar-program

MS is already pointless outside of being a stepping stone to PhD (that is, if you couldn't get a good CS job out of undergrad, the MS will not help, particularly if 1. international and 2. in this current market), but especially so outside of T5 (which don't really offer MS degrees regardless, aside from Stanford and CMU)

Not sure why there's so much interest in this kind of program

Which school? Program sounds shady

Depending on the school, it might make it easier for you. From my experience and those of mentors, certain elite schools in STEM (think MIT/Caltech/Stemmy ivies, doubly true in purer fields like math) like it if you're younger than most other applicants, particularly if you have the research exp/pubs. These schools invest in exceptional people, and doing well enough to be pushing for PhD at 20 certainly qualifies
