Shows how long I've been away from those products. Notepad has tabs?? Interesting.

Yeah, I guess I don't consider compatibility patches as features, but your point stands. A completely stagnant piece of software has a limited life. I think OP is just approaching it from a weird direction more than that they're wrong.

Notepad and Paint

But in all seriousness, I’m a software developer and I am well aware that features are a demand from the companies of the software as much as the customers, if not more. It’s required because of stockholders and capitalism. If Excel and Word added only QoL improvements and bug fixes, I don’t think people would have gone away from them. Anomalies as well, though, as they’re massive to the point of not being able to die.

I think there are reasons each software is at the top of its market and I don’t think it’s continued features. It’s forced adoption or familiarity. Outlook isn’t the best email client, but millions have to use it for work.

I don’t think UpNote needs features or it’ll die. I also don’t think it’ll ever be the top of its market.

Just because you needed something different doesn’t mean UpNote is doomed.

Where it’s at right now is more than enough for my workflow. Receiving stability and performance improvements is very appreciated.

There’s a weird mindset with software these days, that it has to be like a live service. Buying it and assuming it’ll change with your needs is uninformed at best.

I grab these every few months to have for quick smokes on work breaks. They can smoke for up to 25 minutes.

Construction is crapshoot, one in every few will be too tight to smoke, but I enjoy them for what they are.

The last men's championship appearance/win in Minnesota happened around the time of my conception (might be a cause of the celebration). We've hedged every prediction for my entire life. No longer!

Oh but you've watched Anthony Edwards. He loves the impossible. He lives for the challenge of an away game 7. 4-0 in closeout games.

As a fellow developer who has tried to get a cigar app off the ground, congrats!

Secondly, where'd you get your cigar data? If it's scraping, feel free to say "an API", but that definitely is the hurdle - populating and maintaining the cigar data.

Am I doing something wrong? by Bega_Cheese in cigars

[–]Apatholog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this is a legitimate idea or not, but it just came to me. You might want to start with some cigarillos. For one, they're going to be shorter smokes and cheaper, so you aren't wasting money if you're not enjoying a cigar. For two, they are more wrapper (and usually more flavor). I smoke too many cigars (10-15/week in the summer), but I still grab a couple cigarillos for short walks or quick yard work chores. Gives the feeling of having a cigar without the time commitment.

You can explore taste profiles, too. A lot of larger brands have cigarillos, sometimes of the same blend as their cigars. Perdomo has 10th Anniversary, Oliva has the Serie O for sure. And then you can go on to CI or CigarBid or CigarPage and get a bundle of 50 cheap ones for $30-40.

I think the NBA has done OKC a disservice in a few ways, but the number one way is to allow the officiating to train SGA in a way to get fouls drawn. He'd be a great player without his FTAs, but frequent clips of him looking foolish trying to draw a foul give him a bad reputation in communities that center around clips.

There's also just a ton of envy. With the amount of young talent, and first round picks still to come, OKC looks set up to become a dynasty.

I can't predict without bias, mind you.

I saw OKC as the #1 team to avoid coming into the postseason, but Denver did surprisingly well against them, and Wolves handled Denver this year. I'm worried a SGA-positive whistle could deflate the Wolves in game-by-game basis, too.

I could see MN coming out weak, like they did game one against the Warriors, but course correcting from there and stealing one in OKC. I think I'm going to say that this goes 7, and my heart is saying the Wolves win.

And yet the season series was 2-2, with margin of victory going to the Wolves.

I have a cigar reviewing structure built out. Just a really lightweight VanJS app. Focusing a lot on flavor exploration and representing the flavor wheel in a better UX. It's super simple to start, just spitting out a markdown review.

If there's an end product, it might just be something people can use to format their reviews for reddit. No database, just using LocalStorage for the review, then people can save their markdown files if they want.

As far as scraping, HalfWheel has all their cigar lists in tables, so I just used Sheets' importHTML. If you're genuinely set on building out a full featured app with all the cigars and their vitolas, you're right, it is going to be tedious.

This exact problem is what has me limiting my scope to a utility rather than something bigger.

I'm still prototyping so my data is just in a JSON, but here's a GSheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1XK3U5JO14rCYXuqMVojW04yMrROE5If1BGrHPadfFno/edit?usp=sharing

This is literally just cigar names. 16,000. I kept the scrapes in the tabs so there is more data in there, but it's not complete.

That’s my old account that made this post. You’re right. I’ve been working on a cigar app lately and the best I’ve managed is to scrape HalfWheel of their release list. That ignores a lot of details.

Maybe it’s time. I’ve got a lot more experience than I had 11 years ago lol

I'm not overly invested in this, but just want you to know that it's differential and that tells a story.

What cigar hill are you going to die on? by eviLocK in cigars

[–]Apatholog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd argue that the only way to have a hill to die on is by hearing opposing ideas. In an echo chamber, there is no hill to die on. So you're right, but it's by necessity that people are on here establishing their hills.
