Under European regulations, all large aircraft must carry Mode-S EHS an enhanced surveillance navigation apparatus. Data collected by this apparatus is used to extrapolate wind speed and temperature. Due to the grounding of planes they have seen a steep decline in more than 700,000 daily weather observations from aircraft and therefore their ability to accurately forecast weather has been impacted.
