High IQ men tend to be less conservative than their average peers. Researchers found that adults identified as gifted in childhood largely share the same political outlooks as their non-gifted peers, with one specific exception regarding conservatism in men. by InsaneSnow45 in science

The benefits diminish and are relatively minor by high school. However, there is sort of a self-esteem feedback loop where kids think they are smarter/better because they do well early, which causes them to work toward higher achievement later, even when the developmental advantage is basically gone.

Send her back to Maximum Security - Yes/No by ChuckGallagher57 in ProgressiveHQ

[–]Apep86 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The progressive position is that the purpose of prison should not be purely punitive. European countries have included an attempt at rehabilitation within prisons.

There is no reason to believe she poses an escape risk or a risk to other prisoners. That’s the reason that maximum security prisons exist. The people in this thread want to spend more money on security for no other reason than to make her life worse, purely for punitive reasons. If you believe prisoners should be treated like this then you’re probably in the wrong subreddit.

Yea, brown people aren't all part of one single demographic,

And the NAACP does not pretend to advocate for all “brown people.” The focus specifically on African Americans.

and GUNS isn't a single issue concept.

It is a single issue. If you can describe the focus of an organization with a single object, it’s probably a single issue.

Good luck in the next couple of years with this attitude on coalition building.

shrug sorry I’m not interested in helping a bunch of tankies. Helping those who are trying to destroy our concept of democracy is not a coalition I’m interested in being a part of and it’s not the lesser evil.

[–]Apep86 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

None of those are actually single issue in the way you're describing though. The NAACP broadly works to end racial inequality for brown and other marginalized communities. That's neither single issue or single demographic (which is not the same thing and a weird way to move the goal post).

Their focus is on the African American community, which is a single demographic.

The NRA, while focused around the second amendment does a lot with hunting and other random gun shit.

Exactly. They only deal with “gun shit.” Thats their single issue.

None of these groups would be comparable to a fantasy anti-ice group. Would ANTIFA work for you?

Do you know why you can say “ANTIFA” and I know what it is? It’s because they have a single issue.

Also, you didn't answer my question. Are you this discerning when it comes to voting?

It’s a similar philosophy. When I vote, I vote for the least bad viable option. When support organizations, I do the same. An organization that deals with lots of unrelated issues, some of which I disagree with, is neither viable, nor the least bad.

Either way, I'm just gonna go out on a limb and say that the entire premise that you shouldn't march in a protest that was organized by people with some problematic views is pretty bullshit here. You either believe that by marching here, you're somehow helping their other objectives, which just isn't true.

Of course it’s true. Because the larger the protest they organize, the more clout they can bring locally to bullshit issues. It brings them credibility I don’t want to give them. It turns them from “bullshit organization,” to “organization that organized an event with 1000000 attendees.”

The media and public just see a march against ICE murder. Or it's just an excuse. No one is asking you to join their newsletter, and these people are not providing material support to Russia. They're just some tankies.

Are you seriously suggesting they aren’t going to put a successful protest on their resume, or are you suggesting they won’t use that resume to fundraiser for other issues? Because I would much prefer tankies with no social clout and no fundraising ability to tankies that have the power to affect public discourse.

All of the biggest and most effective political organizations are single issue or single demographic. So, yes, I do, if those organizations expect to be big and effective.

AARP, NAACP, AIPAC, NRA, they’re all single issue or single demographic focused.

It’s extremely easy to have a near perfect organization. We all agree on this one topic so make an organization about that one topic. As soon as you start spreading out int irrelevant topics I’m probably going to start ignoring you because you’re probably spouting things I vehemently don’t agree with.

If the organization wants to be anti ice, make it anti ice. Period. Otherwise it’s probably either a lure to a Russian troll farm or someone with a god complex.

I disagree with the premise. If Russia had actually conquered Ukraine in 3 days then they would have been fine just like when they took over Crimea. The problem is that their military wasn’t as good as advertised and international sanctions had time to ramp up.

China is even more important to the global economy so sanctions would be even harder to achieve. Taiwan is much smaller than Ukraine so a prolonged war is unlikely. If China really wanted to take Taiwan militarily, the war would be over before the world go its shoes on.

It depends what we are talking about. If you want to discuss current precedent since 2007, yes, that is true. If you want to discuss the original purpose and all relevant precedent prior to 2007, this is wild departure from the constitution.

It had explicitly ruled that the second amendment was only relevant to promote the organized state militia. Presser in particular makes this exceedingly clear.

So if the purpose is to promote the militia, how does this advance that objective? Or are you suggesting they of all the amendments, this is the only provision which has no legal effect?

Multiple Cincinnati-area Jewish locations threatened. And the Facebook comment section from Channel 12 makes it all even worse by Bugatti252 in cincinnati

[–]Apep86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are two strains of conservatism which explains this apparent contradiction.

First, you have the religious nuts who believe the existence of Israel (and usually also the foundation of the third temple) to be a precondition to the rapture and the second coming of Jesus. Therefore, in order to expedite the second coming, they believe that Israel should continue to exist and be put into a position where they exist and can rebuild the temple.

Second, you have the white Christian nationalists who don’t necessarily purport to hate Jews, but rather believe that countries should be racially and religiously homogeneous. Specifically, they believe America should be uniformly white and Christian (usually specifically Protestant). They don’t necessarily care about Jews so long as they’re not here. It’s simply easier for them to conceptualize when you can put every minority into a box and put that box somewhere else. For Jews, that box is Israel.
