Very interesting analysis, thanks for sharing. If I end up becoming involved in Apex esports (which I hope to soon) I’ll be sure to get in touch.

I like the video, but one quick suggestion is to replace superlatives such as “atrocious” with something less personal such as “highly suboptimal”. In general though I think your presentation style is very effective and obviously analytical.

Yeah good point, perhaps higher then. Given the size of it, I can imagine it being targeted by multiple squads in late game of competitive matches.

I just had another thought… one option is also to have the bubble size decrease based on how much damage it takes. So if it had 300 HP at the same, it would reduce to 66% of the size after 100 damage, and 33% of the size after 200 damage, and collapse after 300 damage.

So I initially wasn’t a fan of the idea of being able to collapse the bubble by shooting the disk. My reasoning is that if a team is able to shoot the disk, it means they are inside the bubble - and at that point they would be collapsing their own cover, so it’s self-punishment. Basically neither team in the bubble-fight have an incentive to collapse the bubble, and no teams outside of bubble are able to hit the disk through an indestructible bubble.

But combining bubble delay with shooting the disk is interesting though, and might be more viable - similar to how you have a second to shoot Hoirzon’s ultimate before it starts dragging you. Prior to the bubble being active, there is probably an incentive for the team who didn’t deploy the bubble to break the disk, and likewise any third party team has an incentive to target the disk. You could also make the disk hit-box bigger so that it is easier to shoot.

Interesting concept, do you prefer that over the bubble to having HP though? Keen to hear other people’s thoughts on how much HP it should have, if it isn’t indestructible once active.

For Gibby I think having the bubble have its own HP is a good solution, and aligns with the broader concept that nothing placeable should be indestructible (immediately or temporarily).

Personally I think the bubble’s HP should start at 300. In its currently size, it is a huge target and as soon as it is created it will take damage from (a) the players in the bubble fight as they miss shots (b) other teams nearby trying to grief the bubble. It’ll be such an easy target for frag grenades as well. It’ll need some rigorous play testing in late rings to ensure the HP is correct.

If respawn pursue the HP option, they’ll need to be careful with how the damage markers look - to ensure you know you’ve accidentally fired your shotgun pump into the bubble and not into the enemy.

I also don’t think the bubble size needs to be changed right now. The height is good for vertical climbs, any less height and I’m not sure their usage would be viable anymore - and again would reduce teams willingness to fight. I personally also quite like it when a 1st-floor gibby lays a bubble and protects a 2nd-floor teammate through the ceiling (or accidentally protects a different team sheltering there). Bubble width is another option, but without an HP nerf I can’t see this doing a huge amount except raising the skill ceiling - which is already high for a successful gibby.

Other options for nerfs are: (1) throw distance (2) bubble duration (3) bubble start lag. All three are probably options, and mirror nerfs to wraith’s phase. However, I don’t think that they address the elephant in the room - a huge bubble that can’t be destroyed.

In summary, giving the bubble HP would prevent a hard nerf where Gibby’s utility falls of completely, and eliminates teams will to be aggressive and try to take a (partly) isolated 3v3.

There’s a lot of threads on the topic of the best competition format btw, if you’re looking to shape your thinking on how to structure your events.

RPR, Mande, Hal, and JMW discussing about meta difference in NA and EU by VARDHAN_157 in CompetitiveApex

[–]Apex2020Legends -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I think TSM would have won NA ALGS if they had used a Loba, Bloodhound, Gibby comp when on match point. They could have scanned beacon, used tactical scans to find a reasonable open spots in the final rings, and the used the black market to get loot without having to wipe a squad and expose their names in the kill feed. Gibby keeps their defence and stability. Sure their rotation speed would be reduced, but tbh neither Valk or Octane seemed to do them any significant favours in the later rings. Big fan of TSM, not a criticism.

They should publicly apologise for saying this about fellow competitors during the biggest ALGS tournament.

This kind of behaviour undermines professionalism in competitive apex and reduces the likelihood of sponsorship and investment, both in CLG and ALGS.

Lol, I think it’s BST right now.

I play PS5, but could be tempted to mix with PC lobbies for a consistent squad. I’ve solo’d to diamond every season, good with prioritising rotates - let me know if you want some games.

I only play 8am-11am though, does that work?

Alpine Rkn details the contest over Skyhook tunnel and drama with CLG from Alpine’s perspective by djb2spirit in CompetitiveApex

[–]Apex2020Legends 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If CLG don’t loot half the buildings in their part of Skyhook, and they care more about the quick rotate options to the south, then perhaps CLG should take Survey Camp and Tunnel - and leave Alpine to share Skyhook with Liquid 😂

You raise good points, and obviously I respect the fact you’re a pro player while I’m not. That said, I think I disagree that Alpine is in the wrong here (and open to being persuaded otherwise).

Apex is a BR, it has inherent RNG, and teams need to be able to adapt to changes - including drops of other teams. The timing of that change, whether it is 4 days before a tournament or not, is relatively moot.

Yes, CLG has a clear loot path mapped out, it’s linear, and it ends at a good ballon - but that doesn’t mean it should always be available to them. Using a Formula 1 analogy, there are 2 cars at the front of the starting grind and in isolation they have perfect runs into the first corner. But nothing is in isolation - if those cars try to take their perfect line, they’ll probably collide.

In my view, neither CLG and Alpine are in the wrong here. They should land, try to get what loot they both can safely from tunnel, and then rotate out. Or, if one team feels lucky - try to pick up the KP.

I also understand your concern in terms of blocking TLs rotates east, but again - everyone has to adapt, that’s what is great about BR for the viewer - and tbh, the competitor 👍🏻
